About The Position

The Department of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus seeks a part-time (.70 FTE) Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) at the Senior Instructor level to support clinical operations across the Orthopedic Foot & Ankle and Sports Medicine services. This position will function as a shared Advanced Practice Provider (APP) supporting the Foot & Ankle section 2 days and Sports Medicine faculty 1 day. The APP will work in a high-volume academic orthopedic practice providing comprehensive care for musculoskeletal conditions including foot and ankle disorders, sports injuries, and postoperative orthopedic care. The role includes clinic care, surgical assistance, perioperative patient management, and coordination of care with orthopedic faculty, residents, fellows, and clinical staff.

Requirements

  • State of Colorado Certified Physician Assistant or inclusion on the State of Colorado Advanced Practice Registry as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants or certification by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
  • CPR or BLS Certification.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Self-directed, detail-oriented, and adaptable in a high-volume clinical environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior orthopedic clinical experience preferred.
  • Experience assisting in orthopedic surgical procedures.
  • Experience performing injections and minor orthopedic procedures.
  • Experience with complex wound closure or surgical assisting in orthopedic procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations on assigned patients.
  • Assess and treat acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions including foot, ankle, and sports-related injuries.
  • Provide direct patient care in the orthopedic clinic setting.
  • Prescribe medications, imaging studies, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and durable medical equipment (DME) as appropriate.
  • Complete necessary medical documentation including clinic notes, FMLA forms, school notes, and other required patient documentation.
  • Perform joint aspirations and joint injections.
  • Perform tendon sheath injections.
  • Provide casting, splinting, and wound care as needed.
  • Assist with fracture care including reductions when appropriate.
  • Assist orthopedic surgeons in the operating room.
  • Provide pre-operative and post-operative patient care.
  • Assist in surgical procedures including multilayer tissue closure and wound closure techniques.
  • Write appropriate perioperative orders and manage postoperative care plans.
  • Coordinate patient care activities with physicians, nurses, and clinic support staff.
  • Support efficient clinic flow and patient access.
  • Communicate patient status and clinical findings to supervising physicians when appropriate.
  • Maintain compliance with safety, infection control, and clinical quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and documentation within the electronic health record.
  • Become proficient in Epic and serve as a resource to other clinical staff when appropriate.
  • Participate in departmental educational activities including academic conferences and journal clubs.
  • Assist in training and supervision of medical students, residents, fellows, and APP students.
  • Participate in educational programs and outreach events as appropriate.
  • Assist with clinical research projects as appropriate.
  • Assist with development of patient education materials and clinical protocols.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • The scope of the role may expand as the APP develops increased clinical experience and independence.
