About The Position

The Advanced Practice Provider practices in the Surgical Service to the full extent of their education, training, and certification, providing care to Veterans with surgical specialty problems. The role independently manages a panel of patients with acute and chronic health conditions, emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention through evidence-based practice. The provider assesses, evaluates, and coordinates care; develops and adjusts individualized care plans; orders and interprets laboratory tests and diagnostic studies; prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions; initiates referrals and consultations; and educates patients and families. The provider works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to plan, implement, and evaluate surgical care, serves as a VA and community liaison, and meets applicable standards and regulatory requirements. The position calls for leadership, teamwork, and conduct consistent with VA’s ICARE values: Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence. The position provides nocturnal and weekend coverage on a night shift with rotating on-call duties and weekends. It is not eligible for telework and is not a virtual position. The role requires an approved nurse practitioner education credential, an active unrestricted APN license, and current board certification in an accepted nurse practitioner specialty. Nurse II is the entry grade and requires no experience beyond the basic education requirements; Nurse III requires one year of specialized APN experience equivalent to Nurse II. Preferred experience includes first-line management of critically ill cardiovascular and surgical ICU patients, including immediate postoperative cardiac surgery, acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, arrhythmias, and hemodynamic instability, as well as proficiency with invasive hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation, vasoactive and inotropic drips, and mechanical circulatory support devices such as IABP and Impella. The VA offers competitive salary, regular salary increases, potential performance awards, 50 days of paid time off annually (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, and 11 federal holidays), a traditional federal pension with five-year vesting, a federal 401(k) with up to 5% in VA contributions, and federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance. One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory is required. The position requires visual acuity, hearing, clear speech, manual dexterity, and potentially extended periods of walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Patient or object transfers may be required. The incumbent may encounter infected patients, contaminated materials, isolation or procedural protective clothing, and occasionally combative patients, and must be able to work effectively under stress and adapt priorities to patient needs.
