About The Position

The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide specialty medical care at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, WI. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team and will contribute to excellence in patient care, patient safety, quality improvement, and teaching. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), salaried (exempt) inpatient position supporting the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital. The APP functions as a core member of the inpatient team, providing high-acuity postoperative and perioperative care for patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic surgery.

  • Advanced Practice Nurse/ Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner Wisconsin RN License
  • Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • DEA registration
  • Nurse Practitioner Certification from a nationally accredited professional nursing organization
  • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP (AGACNP)
  • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPCNP)
  • Family NP (FNP)
  • Physician Assistant Wisconsin Physician Assistant License
  • Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) required within 6 months of start date
  • DEA registration

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in vascular surgery or a surgical subspecialty preferred, including ambulatory clinic management, inpatient consultative care, perioperative management, and operating room support.
  • Open to experienced APPs; new graduates may be considered with relevant clinical training.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting comprehensive patient assessments—histories, physical exams, and evaluation of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status—across a complex surgical population.
  • Ordering and interpreting laboratory values, imaging, and diagnostic studies, and developing individualized pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical management plans.
  • Managing postoperative recovery and longitudinal inpatient care, monitoring treatment effectiveness and adjusting plans in response to clinical changes.
  • Performing bedside procedures within scope and credentialing, and providing hands-on support in the perioperative environment.
  • Collaborating closely with CT surgery attendings, fellows, residents, nursing staff, intensivists, and subspecialty consultants to deliver coordinated, team-based care.
  • Educating and counseling patients and families on diagnoses, procedures, recovery expectations, and discharge planning.
  • Documenting thoroughly and accurately within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
