About The Position

Join an experienced and highly supportive team of Newborn Medicine APPs at UVA Medical Center. This role involves providing comprehensive inpatient care for newborns from delivery through discharge. You will collaborate closely with engaged and accessible physician partners in a collaborative academic medical center environment. An onsite NICU is available for consultation and transfer of critically ill or higher-acuity neonates. New team members benefit from a structured onboarding experience with an individualized orientation plan designed to foster confidence and success. APPs are supported in developing key clinical skills, including neonatal resuscitation and newborn circumcision procedures. Supported by experienced APP colleagues, collaborating physicians, and an onsite NICU team, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality care to newborns and their families from the moment of birth through discharge.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Pediatric or Family Nurse Practitioner program
  • Current licensure and certification as required by state and institutional guidelines
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required; training and certification support will be provided for new hires as needed
  • Strong clinical assessment, communication, and collaborative practice skills
  • Commitment to providing family-centered care
  • Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree.
  • License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Associate, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia.
  • If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.
  • Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.

Nice To Haves

  • Neonatal, newborn nursery, pediatric, or related clinical experience preferred
  • Circumcision training and/or certification preferred; training opportunities are available for qualified new hires

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive newborn assessments and physical examinations
  • Provide inpatient management of newborn patients from birth through discharge
  • Attend deliveries as indicated and provide neonatal resuscitation when needed
  • Develop and implement plans of care in collaboration with physicians and multidisciplinary team members
  • Identify newborns requiring a higher level of care and facilitate transfer to the NICU when appropriate
  • Perform newborn circumcisions in accordance with departmental standards and privileges
  • Educate and support families regarding newborn care, feeding, safety, and discharge planning
  • Document patient care in the electronic medical record
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, nursing staff, consultants, and families
  • Participate in resident training and learning
