About The Position

The Department of Internal Medicine at UTMB is undergoing growth and transformation, focusing on delivering high-value care, driving research and innovation, and cultivating excellence in medical education. The Division of Geriatrics is dedicated to improving the health and independence of older adults through clinical care, education, and research. This includes comprehensive geriatric care in various settings, a House Call Program for homebound older adults, and leadership of the Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit. The Division is also committed to training future geriatricians and integrating geriatric principles into medical education. Research activities focus on healthy aging, dementia care, falls prevention, polypharmacy, and healthcare delivery innovations, in partnership with the Sealy Center on Aging. This position involves providing patient-centered care to medically complex and functionally limited older adults in an ambulatory setting. The role emphasizes high-quality, age-friendly clinical care, teaching, and engagement in the academic mission. The successful candidate will join a team dedicated to improving health outcomes for older adults and advancing geriatric education.

Requirements

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited program.
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA-C) with current license in the State of Texas

Nice To Haves

  • Current Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) certification or Physician Assistants (PA-C) with Certificates of Added Qualifications in Acute Care
  • Experience in providing acute care to geriatric or medically complex populations.
  • Experience in an academic medical center or teaching environment
  • Demonstrated involvement in scholarly activity, quality improvement projects, or curriculum development in geriatric care.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive outpatient care for older adults, addressing complex medical, cognitive, and functional conditions.
  • Provides primary care for patients in the geriatric house call program, as well as residents living in both independent and assisted living settings.
  • Performs individualized history and physical examinations for diverse populations inclusive of social determinants of health.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic testing in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
  • Precepting and mentoring school of nursing and school of medicine students.
  • Develops a comprehensive plan of care that encompasses evidence-based practice guidelines, practice protocols, Medicare, Medicaid, and other state and federal regulations.
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
  • Provides appropriate education for current health diagnoses as well as anticipatory guidance for health promotion and disease prevention applicable to the individual’s health and socioeconomic status.
  • Monitors plan of care for cost-effectiveness and the achievement of expected improvements, while openly seeking feedback from patients, significant others, colleagues, allied health, appropriate referrals, and collaborating physician to enhance quality outcomes.
  • Works independently to full scope of practice in compliance with the Texas Nurse Practice Act with acknowledgement of collaborating physician availability for consultation and collaboration.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams—including nursing, pharmacy, social work, and rehabilitation—for optimal care of older adults.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, clinical skills training, and geriatric-focused academic programs.
