About The Position

The Department of Internal Medicine at UTMB is undergoing growth and transformation, focusing on delivering high-value care, driving research and innovation, and cultivating excellence in medical education. The Division of Geriatrics is dedicated to improving the health and quality of life for older adults through clinical care, education, and research. This includes comprehensive geriatric care in various settings, a cornerstone House Call Program for homebound older adults, and the Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit. The Division also trains future geriatricians and integrates geriatric principles into broader medical education. Research efforts focus on healthy aging, dementia care, falls prevention, polypharmacy, and healthcare delivery innovations, in partnership with the Sealy Center on Aging. UTMB is seeking a full-time advanced practice provider for the Division of Geriatrics, emphasizing age-friendly clinical care, teaching, and academic engagement.

Requirements

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited program.
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA-C) with current license in the State of Texas.
  • Completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) (for PAs).
  • No experience required (for PAs).
  • Completion of a graduate level (or higher) nurse practitioner program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) (for NPs).
  • No experience required (for NPs).
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) (for PAs).
  • Licensed Physician Assistant by the Texas Physician Assistant Board/Texas Medical Board (TPAB/TMB) (for PAs).
  • Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) (for NPs).
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) by the Texas Board of Nursing (TBON) (for NPs).
  • Licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in a nurse practitioner clinical area of specialization by the Texas Board of Nursing (TBON) (for NPs).

Nice To Haves

  • Current Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) certification or Physician Assistants (PA-C) with Certificates of Added Qualifications in Acute Care
  • Experience in providing acute care to geriatric or medically complex populations.
  • Experience in an academic medical center or teaching environment
  • Demonstrated involvement in scholarly activity, quality improvement projects, or curriculum development in geriatric care.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive geriatric assessments for hospitalized older adults, including cognition, mood, mobility, function, nutrition, and social support.
  • Provide consultative recommendations (in collaboration with geriatric faculty) to primary teams (including hospitalist, surgical, ICU, and subspecialty services).
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
  • Collaborate with geriatricians and all members of interdisciplinary teams—including nursing, pharmacy, social work, and rehabilitation—for optimal care of older adults.
  • Performs responsible clinical care in collaboration with the unit physician and under approved protocols, manages the medical aspects of care in the observation, assessment, diagnosis, intervention, evaluation, rehabilitation, care and counsel, and health teachings of persons who are ill, injured or infirm or experiencing changes in normal health processes; and in the promotion and maintenance of health of prevention of illness in a clinical setting.
