Advanced Practice Provider (APP, PA, NP), Inpatient Leukemia - Full-Time, Rotating
About The Position
Join the University of Chicago Medicine as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) for our Inpatient Leukemia service. The Advanced Practice Provider will be responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management and will manage a caseload of patients by exercising autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The APP will provide healthcare and patient services that may include educational, research, and clinical nursing specialist support, as well as complete administrative activities under the direction and supervision of the Director/leadership. The APP has acquired the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to assist the physician through organized instruction and supervised practice. The Inpatient Leukemia service is an APP-staffed service with the support of a Hematology/Oncology Fellow and Hematology/Oncology Attending. This is a day shift position from 7am to 7:30pm. After an orientation period of approximately 3 months, the APP will work autonomously and collaboratively with the rest of the APP team, Leukemia attending, Leukemia fellow, and pharmacist to manage Leukemia service inpatients. The team rounds in the morning and the APPs present patients with their assessments and plans. APPs then carry out the plan for the day, calling consults, placing orders, admitting expected and unexpected admits, and performing procedures. This candidate will be trained in the management of acute leukemia, chronic leukemia, as well as oncologic emergencies (eg neutropenic fever, tumor lysis syndrome, differentiation syndrome, DIC, HLH).
Requirements
- Master's of Science in Nursing (for Nurse Practitioner)
- Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois RN and APN licensure/registration (for Nurse Practitioner)
- Certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the ANCC or AANP (for Nurse Practitioner)
- Must have or be able to qualify for Illinois and DEA prescribing numbers (for Nurse Practitioner)
- Completion of an accredited (physician assistant) educational program (for Physician Assistant)
- Certification in ACLS and by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois licensure/registration (for Physician Assistant)
Nice To Haves
- At least 1 year of inpatient experience preferred
- Previous oncology experience preferred
- Acute Care preferred
Responsibilities
- Taking patient history, conducting examinations, diagnosing illness
- Pre and post-operative patient evaluation and ordering and interpreting laboratory tests
- Ability to exercise autonomy in medical decision-making, provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services
- Comprehensive direct patient care management
