About The Position

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center's Department of General Internal Medicine (GIM), Section of Consultative Medicine, is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) - Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) - for their inpatient consult service. This role involves providing comprehensive inpatient and consultative care, managing complex medical needs, coordinating care, and supporting patients throughout their hospitalization and treatment. The APP will contribute to patient education, clinical collaboration, and continuity of care, ensuring seven-day coverage for the service. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of APP experience with a strong foundation in Internal Medicine. Preferred candidates will also have experience in Weight Management/Obesity Clinics or relevant certifications. Strong clinical judgment, effective communication, job stability, and the ability to transition within one month are essential.

Requirements

• Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice (Degree may be waived for APRNs recognized by the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003).
• Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
• Master's Degree from an Accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program (except for PAs who graduated prior to 2013).
• Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Upon Hire).
• APRN - Adv Practice Registered Nurse (Upon Hire) or relevant APRN certification.
• BLS - Basic Life Support (Upon Hire).
• PAC - Physician Assistant Certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (Upon Hire).
• PA - Physician Assistant Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (Upon Hire).
• Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing (MAY BE REQUIRED Upon Hire).
• Must obtain and maintain relevant clinical privileges.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

• Assess patients through comprehensive histories, physical examinations, and psychosocial assessments.
• Manage chronic and acute medical conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, COPD, and common episodic illnesses.
• Assess and manage suspected DVT, asymptomatic PE, and chemotherapy-related adverse events.
• Provide care for acutely ill hospitalized surgical patients.
• Communicate findings and treatment plans to physicians, patients, and families.
• Complete histories, physical assessments, and progress notes within 24 hours.
• Order diagnostic testing, medications, and treatments within delegated prescriptive authority.
• Review laboratory, pathology, radiology, and other diagnostic reports.
• Complete clinical documentation, including radiology, nuclear medicine, and prescription-related paperwork.
• Place patients on clinical pathways and support care coordination activities.
• Support General Internal Medicine services in collaboration with faculty physicians.
• Coordinate care with supervising physicians, consultants, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Review diagnostic results and assist with patient disposition planning.
• Facilitate communication across specialties and healthcare teams.
• Respond to provider consultations and serve as a liaison for patients and families.
• Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans and ongoing care.
• Provide training and mentorship to nursing personnel, APP students, house officers, and medical students.
• Participate in clinical research activities and patient eligibility assessments.
• Attend monthly Consultative Medicine meetings and Division of Internal Medicine Grand Rounds.
• Promote a service-oriented, patient-centered approach to care.
• Maintain collaborative relationships with patients, families, physicians, and healthcare team members.
• Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and ethical practice standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
