About The Position

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine has a 1.0 FTE faculty position available at the rank of Instructor for an Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA). Under the direction of the full-time faculty, this position provides outpatient and inpatient medical at the University of Colorado Hospital for the Comprehensive Thoracic Aortic Disease (CTAD) program. The position is non-surgical with expectations of four 10 hour shifts a week. The candidate may also engage in similar duties for other cardiac surgery patients who are not part of the CTAD program as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited NP or PA program
  • Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure by a national professional organization.
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Colorado
  • Admission to the Advanced Practice Registry of the Colorado Board of Nursing
  • Current PA license for the state of Colorado
  • Prescriptive authority required
  • Prior experience in specialty area
  • Current ACLS certification

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience coordinating a multi-disciplinary clinical program
  • Prior experience with EPIC
  • Prior experience with interpreting CT scans

Responsibilities

  • Discussions with patients regarding information about the aortic program, education on their disease processes and management of aortic disease.
  • Ordering and interpreting testing including CT angiography of aorta, echocardiograms and labs.
  • Reviewing medical records to determine if appropriate for clinic and if any additional tests needed prior to clinic appointment.
  • Prescribing medications as needed, including pre-procedure medications.
  • Conducting peer to peer review or writing medical necessity letters with insurance companies for pre-authorization of tests as appropriate.
  • Communicating with referring providers regarding patient referrals.
  • Independently performing age appropriate history and physical examinations for complex acute, critical and chronically ill patients
  • Round on inpatients and perform inpatient consults as needed
  • Collaboration with team members during weekly multi-disciplinary aortic conference to finalize patient plans and order tests and referrals as needed.
  • Accurate and efficient documentation in EPIC system.
  • Contacting referring physicians/PCP for any other medical issues that may have been discovered or referring patient to appropriate specialty/provider as needed
  • Facilitating staff, patient and family decision making by providing appropriate education about disease process.
  • Participating in research in conjunction with faculty expectations
  • Tracking patient outcomes/data
  • Assisting with database accuracy and management
  • Compliance with hospital protocols/standards.
  • Attending departmental meetings on a regular basis
  • Practice in a fiscally responsible manner
  • Dynamic team member with interpersonal and communication skills needed to work with other providers, peers, nurses, RT, social workers, care managers, medical assistants, etc.
