About The Position

The Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (IR) utilizes advanced minimally invasive techniques and imaging guidance as an alternative to conventional surgery. IR radiologists are involved in both the treatment and diagnosis of diseases, offering comprehensive patient care for various body regions. Services include diagnostic arteriography, vascular interventions, stent graft placements, venous access procedures, and embolization cancer therapies. The division performs over 8,000 cases annually and includes an IR Clinic for patient evaluations and follow-ups, with a focus on liver malignancies, uterine fibroid embolization, and varicose vein treatment. Utilizing catheters, X-ray, CT, MRI, and Ultrasound, IR provides alternatives to surgical treatment and can reduce hospital stays. The division moved into a new, state-of-the-art facility in 2019, featuring 8 procedure rooms with advanced imaging capabilities, including CT and cone-beam CT, as well as IVUS, ICE, and CE-US for intra-procedural imaging. The division is also actively involved in research to advance image-guided therapies and scientific knowledge. Faculty are recognized experts in their subspecialties, contributing to clinical care, education, and research. The interprofessional team comprises physicians, APPs, nurses, radiology technicians, and allied health professionals dedicated to health equity, innovation, education, and quality improvement.

Requirements

Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree.
Department and unit specific experience.
License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Associate, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia.
If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.
Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.

Responsibilities

Partners with site Medical Director and clinic leadership to optimize patient flow, operational efficiency, and access to care.
Supports implementation of enhanced care delivery models designed to improve population health outcomes and patient satisfaction.
Participates in performance improvement, data reporting, and outcomes tracking for UVA Radiology and Medical Imaging metrics.
Ensures accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record and adherence to UVA Health documentation and compliance standards.
Demonstrates professionalism through effective communication, teamwork, and commitment to UVA Health’s mission and values.
Participates in interprofessional collaboration with physicians, nurses, care coordinators, and learners to ensure seamless, team-based care.
Engages in continuous professional development and educational activities, including teaching and mentoring opportunities within the Division.
Promotes health equity and inclusion in all aspects of care delivery.
Performs designated Interventional Radiology procedures using specified imaging including fluoroscopy, CT, and ultrasound guidance with and without moderate sedation.
Initiates appropriate emergency care.
Functions as a first or second assistant in the interventional radiology suite in performing procedures.
Outpatient pre-procedure evaluation and assists with preparation of patients for procedures performed in the interventional radiology suite by obtaining consents, skin preparation and administration of local anesthesia.
Provides routine medical management of inpatient care whenever necessary by evaluating and managing patients: ordering diagnostic tests, labs x-ray studies, medications (within the scope of the APP license), activity orders, physical therapy orders, discharge planning, and nutrition.
Completes individual or joins group rounds on all pertinent patients related to the service.
Provides timely and complete communication to referring and primary care physicians.
Communication of treatment plans with Interventional Radiology team.
Provides communication to patient families.
Serves as a resource person in the department and throughout the hospital for interventional radiology procedures.
Completes appropriate documentation on all evaluations and services rendered in the electronic medical record, inclusive of informed consents.
Obtains appropriate consultation from specialty services.
Provides in-person and/or virtual clinic coverage, including patient evaluation, management, and follow-up care.
Responsible for the evaluation and management of patients across all age groups, from pediatric through geriatric.
