About The Position

The licensed pharmacy technician may work in various settings, including hospitals, retail, and ambulatory infusion clinics. They may also specialize in skill sets such as pharmacy buyer/inventory specialist, automation technician, IV room sterile processing technician, IV chemotherapy technician, and medication reconciliation technician. The specific job duties will be aligned with the agreed-upon work assignment between the technician and the pharmacy supervisor or director. Pharmacy technicians in physician-based ambulatory clinics are not required to be licensed by the State Board of Pharmacy, but HonorHealth policy requires all technicians to be licensed to allow for flexibility in various pharmacy practice settings.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Completion of a formalized Technician Training Program
  • 3 years of pharmacy technician experience (retail, hospital, infusion clinics, medication reconciliation or wholesaler experience)
  • Pharmacy Technician (LPT) - License by AZ State Board of Pharmacy

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - Certification issued by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR by the certification of pharmacy technicians (ExCPT)
  • Pharmacy Technician Diploma

Responsibilities

  • Practice within all State Board of Pharmacy, DEA, and FDA rules and regulations.
  • Preparation of prescription orders, including sterile and non-sterile preparation (hazardous and non-hazardous).
  • Unit dose preparation of oral solids, ensuring pre-packaging records are complete.
  • Dispensation and knowledge of automated dispensing machines (ADM) like Lynx and Pyxis.
  • Preparation of ADM cart fills and stocking/restocking.
  • Running reports from ADMs and entering required documentation.
  • Retrieving narcotics and following all requirements for controlled substance distribution.
  • Assisting inventory specialist in maintaining drug inventory levels, including credits/returns to wholesaler and stocking/restocking.
  • Monitoring expiration dates and performing unit inspections.
  • Maintaining a clean workspace at all times.
  • Monitoring temperature control logs.
  • Compounding sterile or non-sterile pharmaceuticals, including chemotherapy, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and IV admixture (for IV Room Pharmacy Tech).
  • Assuring compliance with departmental quality assurance requirements (for IV Room Pharmacy Tech).
  • Performing purchasing and inventory control functions on a daily operational basis (for Inventory Specialist Tech).
  • Receiving and validating invoices (for Inventory Specialist Tech).
  • Coordinating drug recalls, drug transfer logs, and managing hospital formulary inventory (for Inventory Specialist Tech).
  • Utilizing technology like Pharmogistics to optimize pharmacy distribution and inventories (for Inventory Specialist Tech).
  • Overseeing all aspects of hospital automation equipment and serving as a resource for technology projects (for Automation Tech).
  • Assisting pharmacists in daily provision of pharmaceutical services by establishing operational workflows related to automation drug dispensing machines (for Automation Tech).
  • Overseeing daily activities of the medication use process and providing comprehensive pharmacy services in an ambulatory setting (for Ambulatory Infusion Clinic Pharmacy Technician).
  • Responsible for preparation and delivery of sterile and hazardous medication, complex IV admixtures, chemotherapy and biotherapy admixtures (for Ambulatory Infusion Clinic Pharmacy Technician).
  • Responsible for proper planning, purchasing, and inventory control (for Ambulatory Infusion Clinic Pharmacy Technician).
  • Collaborating with physicians and clinical staff on drug dosing, standardization, and quality metrics (for Ambulatory Infusion Clinic Pharmacy Technician).
  • Performing pharmacy technician duties for retail pharmacy according to State Board of Pharmacy (for Retail / Specialty Pharmacy Technician).
  • Assisting under pharmacist supervision in receiving, filling, and dispensing prescriptions (for Retail / Specialty Pharmacy Technician).
  • Responding to patient queries, maintaining records, assisting in patient insurance authorization and manufacturer assistance programs (for Retail / Specialty Pharmacy Technician).
  • Obtaining, verifying, and documenting medication history in the electronic medical record (for Medication Reconciliation Technician).
  • Performing medication histories through patient/family/significant other interviews (for Medication Reconciliation Technician).
  • Interacting with patients, visitors, physicians, and hospital staff in a professional manner (for Medication Reconciliation Technician).
