This dual-track program combines two days of formal instruction at a local technical college with three days of work for a sponsoring employer partner each week, enabling students to apply classroom concepts to a real-world industrial manufacturing environment. Graduates of the FAME program earn both an associate degree and a nationally recognized registered apprenticeship credential – all while making a competitive wage. As a member of both the Kansas City and Topeka FAME chapters, Amcor’s manufacturing plant in Lawrence, Kansas is committed to proactively developing the state’s supply of skilled Industrial Maintenance Technicians. Amcor’s AMT sponsorships are typically offered each spring, following the preferred candidate’s successful completion of their respective chapter’s recruitment process. Quantity and availability of AMT sponsorships may vary from year to year based on business needs and departmental training capacity. The Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) Apprentice is a regular, part-time, benefits-eligible position providing basic technical support to the Injection Molding Maintenance Team at our manufacturing plant in Lawrence, Kansas. They will observe, be trained by, and assist full-time Maintenance Technicians with certain activities essential to the plant’s operations, production, and efficiency objectives. As the AMT Apprentice progresses through the 5-semester curriculum, they will take on more complex responsibilities, with the goal of becoming a safe, capable, and independent Maintenance Team member at the time of their graduation. This role is contingent upon the incumbent’s active enrollment and satisfactory performance in Washburn Tech’s Industrial Maintenance/Manufacturing Technology program.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED equivalent
  • Enrollment in Washburn Institute of Technology’s Industrial Maintenance/Manufacturing Technology program beginning fall 2026
  • Successful completion of the Topeka FAME chapter’s recruitment and selection process for the fall 2026 AMT cohort
  • Demonstrated positive attitude, intrinsic motivation, high integrity, reliable work ethic, and collaborative spirit
  • Open-minded, curious, coachable, adaptable, and interested in learning new skills
  • Aptitude for and interest in mechanics, machinery, automation, and technically challenging/hands-on work
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to understand, retain, and follow detailed directions, work instruction, established procedures, and safety precautions
  • Familiarity with and confidence in using basic hand tools and measurement instruments (hammer, wrench, screwdriver, measuring tape, ruler, etc.)
  • Strong digital literacy, with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and the ability to quickly learn new computer software/programs

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, initiative, and follow-through from Day 1
  • Observe and ask questions of the trainer(s), check in regularly with the Supervisor, and proactively report on progress and challenges, collaborating with team members to creatively resolve problems
  • Assist with simple maintenance tasks such as cleaning mandrels, indicating mandrels, and helping with installation or removal when directed
  • Perform scheduled and preventative maintenance (lubrication, cleaning, parts replacement), keeping shop area and molding equipment neat and orderly
  • Regularly inspect equipment and document findings to identify minor machine issues; escalate concerns to relevant maintenance personnel
  • Accurately complete required documentation with guidance from technicians
  • Embrace a team player mentality by approaching all assigned responsibilities with an open mind and enthusiasm, regardless of scope
  • Communicate with Amcor colleagues in person, via email, and using Microsoft Teams, immediately notifying the Supervisor/nearest leader of any safety concerns, observed Code of Conduct violations, or other emergencies
  • Maintain satisfactory attendance and academic performance at all times
  • Participate in required FAME programming, including regular Mentor meetings, mid-semester check-ins, MCE presentations, etc.; attend optional activities when possible, prioritizing the production schedule and job duties assigned by the Supervisor
