They possess an intuitive grasp of clinical situations and can identify high-priority potential crises before significant clinical changes are evident. The role requires utilizing the nursing process and critical thinking to provide patient care that incorporates the mind, body, and spirit, is individualized, goal-directed, and consistent with current standards of safety. The clinician serves as a recognized resource, leader, and problem-solver for staff, integrating care with a multidisciplinary team and applying nursing principles to comprehensive care delivery. They assume a leadership role in interdisciplinary conferences, use critical thinking to analyze information and draw conclusions, and think creatively to solve problems. Documentation is per department/entity guidelines, and the clinician supports this process for others. Clinical leadership involves delegating and communicating expectations, coaching team members, and using judgment to assess physician orders, questioning them when necessary. They assist staff in developing communication skills, guide staff in new patient situations, and mentor others to improve clinical practice. The nurse-patient/family relationship is established through therapeutic interaction, and the clinician is a resource for regulatory issues. They identify and resolve ethical dilemmas and use complex strategies to interact with challenging patients and families, teaching these strategies to others. Age-appropriate patient education is provided to facilitate recovery, self-care, end-of-life care, and health maintenance. The clinician is recognized as a resource for developing teaching plans and modifying strategies. Advanced competencies in all areas of unit skills are demonstrated, serving as a role model for professional behavior through committee participation. The clinician assumes responsibilities of charge nurse and preceptor for new graduates and orientees, providing expert direct patient care and integrating care with the multidisciplinary team. They demonstrate expert nursing principles for improved outcomes and complex problem-solving skills, recognizing inconsistencies in patient care and managing potential complications. They apply knowledge, expertise, and leadership to achieve outcomes for the unit, department, hospital, organization, and community, complying with all regulatory and accreditation standards, and may participate in evidence-based research utilization.
