About The Position

Parks and Recreation is seeking a qualified individual to hire as an Adult Recreation Supervisor, who will be responsible for planning and overseeing our adult and senior recreation programs. We are looking for an organized, community-minded professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and takes pride in delivering quality recreation experiences for Juneau residents. The ideal candidate brings a combination of program management experience, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to independently manage complex schedules, competing priorities, and diverse user groups. You should be comfortable working across multiple facilities and programs, coordinating with community organizations and the Juneau School District, and serving as a knowledgeable and approachable point of contact for the public. This role requires someone who is as comfortable behind a desk processing permits as they are on the gym floor, solving problems in real time. Essential qualities include: Strong organizational and time management skills to oversee complex schedules across multiple programs, facilities, and user groups simultaneously. Effective communication and relationship-building abilities to work collaboratively with community organizations, school district staff, CBJ departments, and the general public. Program development skills and a genuine interest in growing recreational opportunities for adults and seniors. Experience with permitting, records management, and administrative duties, as this position serves as the Department's primary permit specialist and handles a broad range of administrative responsibilities, including scheduling, invoicing, compliance tracking, and coordination with CBJ departments and outside agencies.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school, or the equivalent
  • Two years of journey-level work experience leading or supporting a recreational program.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification within 30 days of employment
  • Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment and for continued employment
  • Criminal records report (Non-FBI) evaluation results must not indicate convictions that result in a direct nexus to the primary duties involving supervising minors.

Nice To Haves

  • College study in recreation or physical education may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 2.5 semester hours (3.75 quarter hours) of credit for one month of experience for up to six (6) months of the journey-level required experience.
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or equivalent required within 6 months of hire OR a minimum of one year teaching swim lessons

Responsibilities

  • Plan and oversee adult and senior recreation programs, including men's and women's volleyball leagues, coed volleyball, and drop-in pickleball.
  • Grow and expand senior programming in Juneau.
  • Manage scheduling, public programming, and operations across multiple gymnasiums.
  • Administer field use for Parks & Rec sports fields in coordination with community organizations and the Juneau School District.
  • Serve as the Department's primary permit specialist, issuing and administering commercial use, vending & concessions, special event, facility, and field use permits across CBJ parks, trails, and facilities.
  • Supervise Adult Games Officials and Recreation Worker IIs.
  • Lead volleyball classification meetings with the Player Advisory Board.
  • Coordinate with over ten community sports organizations.
  • Play an active role in shaping the future of adult recreation programming in Juneau.
