About The Position

The Department of Corrections, Division of Pretrial, Probation & Parole, is recruiting for an Adult Probation Officer 3 position for the Training Academy at the Palmer State Office Building located in Palmer, Alaska. The incumbent will be developing and delivering curriculum for Pretrial, Probation, and Parole, Correctional and Municipal training basic academies as well as in-service departmental personnel. The focus will be on Pretrial, Probation and Parole (DP3) training disciplines and assisting in providing ongoing educational opportunities for the Department of Corrections. The Division of Pretrial, Probation and Parole Training Academy enhances the safety of the residents in Alaska and the employees of the Department by providing training for correctional professionals through a structured adult learning based model, centered on providing the State of Alaska with qualified and trained personnel prepared to address the numerous challenges facing the supervision of the offender population and their successful reintegration back into the community.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in any field.
  • Two years of professional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, criminal investigation, public safety or law enforcement, or as a social services case manager or counselor.
  • Must be 21 years of age and a United States citizen or a United States National.
  • Must have a high school or home school diploma recognized or certified by a state or a local school district within a state as having met that state's graduation requirement; or have a General Educational Development certificate.
  • Possess a valid driver's license issued within the United States at time of appointment.
  • Program Oversight: Plans, coordinates, and monitors programs to ensure that federal, state, and/or local government program requirements and plans are met, providing professional consultation on the specialized services of the program or associated project(s).
  • Criminal Law: Knowledge of state and Federal criminal laws, including procedures, regulations, guidelines, and precedents related to admissibility of evidence and prosecution.
  • Decision Making: Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals; causes change.
  • Legal, Government, and Jurisprudence: Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, legal practices and documents, Government regulations, Executive orders, agency rules, Government organization and functions, and the democratic political process.
  • Arrest: Knowledge of the laws, principles, and procedures used in apprehending a criminal suspect, including polices for pursuit and proper use of force and capture such as Miranda rights.
  • Have not been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence by a civilian court of Alaska, the United States, another state or territory, or by a military court.
  • Have not been convicted during the past ten (10) years by a civilian court of Alaska, the United States, another state or territory, or by a military court of a crime of dishonesty or moral turpitude, of a crime that resulted in serious physical injury to another person, or of two or more driving under the influence offenses.
  • Have not illegally manufactured, transported, or sold a controlled substance during the past 10 years, provided you were under 21 years of age at the time.
  • Have not illegally used a Schedule IA, IIA, IIIA, IVA, or VA controlled substance during the past 5 years, provided you were at least 21 years of age at the time.
  • Have not used marijuana during the last year, provided you were at least 21 years of age at the time.
  • Have not been denied certification by the Alaska Police Standards Council or the responsible certifying agency in any other issuing jurisdiction unless the denial, revocation, or surrender has been rescinded by the council under 13 AAC 85.270 or by the responsible certifying agency of the issuing jurisdiction.
  • Have not used a controlled substance while employed as a certifiable municipal, state, federal peace officer, correctional officer, adult probation officer, or military law enforcement officer.
  • Must complete and submit a notarized F-3 Personal History Statement Form.
  • Must submit copies of Certified Highschool/GED transcripts, Birth certificate or valid passport, HS Foreign Equivalency Evaluation (if applicable), Naturalization certificate (if applicable), DD-214 form (if applicable), Military Evaluations (if applicable), Copy of previous Correctional Officer Academy Transcripts identifying the total number of hours attended.
  • Must provide 3 most recent evaluations, 3 Professional References, Cover Letter, Resume, and Copies of certificates of required minimums if selected for an interview.

Nice To Haves

  • Six years in any combination of postsecondary education from an accredited college and paraprofessional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, criminal investigation, public safety, law enforcement or corrections. (2.67 semester hours or 4 quarter hours of postsecondary education are equal to one month of experience).
