About The Position

The Department of Corrections, Division of Pretrial, Probation and Parole, is recruiting for an Adult Probation Officer 1/2B for the Nome District Office, located in Nome, Alaska. This position provides supervision and case management for adult male and female offenders who are required to report to the Department of Corrections. Job duties include working directly with felony offenders by conducting office meetings, interviews, completing risk/need assessments, urinalysis tests, providing referrals for treatment needs, conducting field contacts, as well as violation arrests and offender transports. The position requires acquiring and documenting historical and current information for the individuals under the supervision of the office. Officers ensure offender compliance with court or parole board issued conditions and report any violation to those entities.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in any field.
  • Four years of paraprofessional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, corrections, criminal investigation, public safety or law enforcement (as a substitution for a bachelor's degree).
  • Four years in any combination of postsecondary education from an accredited college and paraprofessional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, corrections, criminal investigation, public safety or law enforcement (as a substitution for a bachelor's degree).
  • Successful completion of training under a formally established Adult Probation Officer 1-2 (A or B) flexible staffing training plan with the State of Alaska OR A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in any field (for Adult Probation Officer 2B).
  • One year of professional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, criminal investigation, public safety or law enforcement, or as a social services case manager or counselor (for Adult Probation Officer 2B).
  • Five years in any combination of postsecondary education from an accredited college and paraprofessional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, criminal investigation, public safety, law enforcement or corrections (as a substitution for the degree and experience for Adult Probation Officer 2B).
  • Be 21 years of age.
  • Be a United States citizen or a United States National.
  • Possess a high school or home school diploma recognized or certified by a state or a local school district within a state as having met that state's graduation requirement, or have a General Educational Development certificate.
  • Possess a valid driver's license issued within the United States at time of appointment.
  • Not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence by a civilian court of Alaska, the United States, another state or territory, or by a military court.
  • Not have been convicted during the past ten (10) years by a civilian court of Alaska, the United States, another state or territory, or by a military court of a crime of dishonesty or moral turpitude, of a crime that resulted in serious physical injury to another person, or of two or more driving under the influence offenses.
  • Not have illegally manufactured, transported, or sold a controlled substance during the past 10 years, provided you were under 21 years of age at the time.
  • Not have illegally used a Schedule IA, IIA, IIIA, IVA, or VA controlled substance during the past 5 years, provided you were at least 21 years of age at the time.
  • Not have used marijuana during the last year, provided you were at least 21 years of age at the time.
  • Not have been denied certification by the Alaska Police Standards Council or the responsible certifying agency in any other issuing jurisdiction unless the denial, revocation, or surrender has been rescinded.
  • Not have ever used a controlled substance while employed as a certifiable municipal, state, federal peace officer, correctional officer, adult probation officer, or military law enforcement officer.
  • Must complete and submit a notarized F-3 Personal History Statement Form.
  • Must provide certified Highschool/GED transcripts, birth certificate or valid passport, HS Foreign Equivalency Evaluation (if applicable), Naturalization certificate (if applicable), DD-214 form (if applicable), and Military Evaluations (if applicable) as part of the personal history.
  • Must pass a background investigation, drug screening, medical examination, and psychological evaluation.
  • Must provide contact name and phone number for three most recent supervisors if selected for an interview.
  • Must have a legal right to accept employment in the United States.
  • Must be fingerprinted and pass a criminal history check.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

  • Completion of the Department’s Probation Officer Academy and the Probation Officer Field Training Manual (for advancement to Adult Probation Officer 2B).
