About The Position

The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for an Adult Probation Officer 1/2A for the Fairbanks Correctional Center (FCC) located in Fairbanks, Alaska. Institutional Adult Probation Officers are responsible for supervising a caseload of adult felony and misdemeanor offenders who have been remanded to the care and custody of the Department of Corrections. You will prepare various types of reports, manage communications with offenders, prioritize your work daily, be flexible and willing to adapt to a continually changing work environment. In performing your duties, you will need to make sound decisions to ensure compliance with department policy, standard operational procedures and state statues. Our mission statement provides that offenders in our charge will be treated in a safe and humane manner and with a goal of rehabilitation. You will help guide their way during incarceration towards programming and rehabilitative needs. You will have the ability to play a vital role in the reduction of recidivism by possessing a positive attitude and respectful communication skills.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in any field.
• Four years of paraprofessional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, corrections, criminal investigation, public safety or law enforcement (as a substitution for a bachelor's degree).
• Four years in any combination of postsecondary education from an accredited college and paraprofessional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, corrections, criminal investigation, public safety or law enforcement (as a substitution for a bachelor's degree).
• Successful completion of training under a formally established Adult Probation Officer 1-2 (A or B) flexible staffing training plan with the State of Alaska OR A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in any field.
• One year of professional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, criminal investigation, public safety or law enforcement, or as a social services case manager or counselor (required for Adult Probation Officer 2A).
• Five years in any combination of postsecondary education from an accredited college and paraprofessional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, criminal investigation, public safety, law enforcement or corrections (as a substitution for degree and experience for Adult Probation Officer 2A).
• Be 21 years of age and a United States citizen or a United States National.
• Have a high school or home school diploma recognized or certified by a state or a local school district within a state as having met that state's graduation requirement; or have a General Educational Development certificate.
• Possess a valid driver's license issued within the United States at time of appointment.
• Must not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
• Must not have been convicted during the past ten (10) years of a crime of dishonesty or moral turpitude, of a crime that resulted in serious physical injury to another person, or of two or more driving under the influence offenses.
• Must not have illegally manufactured, transported, or sold a controlled substance during the past 10 years, provided you were under 21 years of age at the time.
• Must not have illegally used a Schedule IA, IIA, IIIA, IVA, or VA controlled substance during the past 5 years, provided you were at least 21 years of age at the time.
• Must not have used marijuana during the last year, provided you were at least 21 years of age at the time.
• Must not have been denied certification by the Alaska Police Standards Council or the responsible certifying agency in any other issuing jurisdiction unless the denial, revocation, or surrender has been rescinded.
• Must not have ever used a controlled substance while employed as a certifiable municipal, state, federal peace officer, correctional officer, adult probation officer, or military law enforcement officer.
• Must complete and submit a notarized F-3 Personal History Statement Form.
• Must provide copies of Certified Highschool/GED transcripts, Birth certificate or valid passport, HS Foreign Equivalency Evaluation (if applicable), Naturalization certificate (if applicable), DD-214 form (if applicable), Military Evaluations (if applicable).
• Must pass a background investigation, drug screening, medical examination, and psychological evaluation.
• Must have a legal right to accept employment in the United States.
• Must be fingerprinted and pass a criminal history check.
• Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
