About The Position

Provides supervisory, operational, and administrative oversight of correctional facility operations to ensure the safety, security, and management of inmates, staff, and the facility. With regular attendance, this position leads and directs corrections personnel, ensures compliance with departmental policies, laws, and applicable correctional standards, and supports the effective delivery of programs and services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field.
  • 4 years of work experience in corrections, a detention facility, criminal justice, security, or a related role.
  • 1 year of experience supervising paid subordinates.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the certification as a Correctional Officer within 6 months of employment.
  • Must maintain all required certifications including Defensive Tactics, CPR, PPCT, and other applicable state certifications.
  • Have and maintain a valid Driver’s License, as well as meet eligibility requirements of “acceptable driving standards” as defined by the County.
  • This position is subject to random drug testing throughout employment.

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
  • Proficiency in using the Microsoft Office Suite and other software related to data management, communication, and other common business processes.

  • Knowledge of correctional operations, inmate supervision, security procedures, and infection control practices.
  • Knowledge of supervisory and management principles, including employee development, performance management, discipline, scheduling, and conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of investigative principles and procedures related to inmate incidents, employee conduct, policy violations, grievances, and other internal matters.
  • Skill in responding quickly and effectively during emergencies.
  • Skill in de-escalation, conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and maintaining control during difficult situations.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain confidential records.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply department policies, jail standards, and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during stressful or emergency situations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain emotional stability, and demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and discretion.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, schedules, and operational needs in a 24-hour facility.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Director in overseeing daily facility operations, ensuring compliance with jail standards to keep staff and inmates safe.
  • Participate in management planning, setting goals, and developing programs.
  • Review court decisions, laws, or outside agency directives, assessing their impact and implementing necessary policy changes.
  • Assist with developing and reviewing facility policies and procedures, budgeting, and special projects.
  • Supervise assigned staff, including participation in hiring, performance evaluations, coaching, and disciplinary actions; identify and coordinate training needs, address employee concerns and grievances, and ensure appropriate staffing levels to support safe and effective operations.
  • Provide guidance on laws and policies, conduct inspections, and confirm compliance.
  • Ensure incidents are communicated properly through reports and shift handovers.
  • Contribute to reports and studies, including crime stats and government documents.
  • Investigate inmate complaints and oversee searches, visitation, recreation, and sick calls to maintain security.
  • Responsible for inmate discipline and respond during critical incidents like disturbances or hostage situations, including using force if needed.
  • Monitor inmate count, report serious medical issues, and give first aid/CPR when appropriate.
  • Manage departmental supplies and inventory within budget.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including those of the Sergeant and Correctional Officer.
