About The Position

The Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking an Adult Basic Education Teacher, Correction Education who is ready to teach adult learners in a secure, structured setting. This role at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Coal Township offers the opportunity to provide instruction that strengthens academic skills and supports educational advancement. Your guidance will help inmates stay engaged and focused as they work toward their learning goals. This position provides adult basic education to incarcerated students and supports instructional needs at SCI Coal Township.

Requirements

  • Four years of paraprofessional experience assisting educational staff in a classroom setting that includes or is supplemented by one year of experience providing classroom instruction or possession of an active Instructional 1 or 2 certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education
  • A bachelor's degree in education which includes or is supplemented by successful completion of an institution-approved teaching practicum
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes or is supplemented by completion of an institution-approved teaching practicum, one year of experience providing classroom instruction, or possession of an active Instructional 1 or 2 certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA
  • Meet the PA residency requirement
  • Be able to perform essential job functions
  • Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements

Responsibilities

  • Conduct pretests, determine placement, and adapt curriculum materials to meet learner needs
  • Teach multiple subjects, assign coursework, evaluate progress, and facilitate educational programs
  • Maintain attendance, inventory, and payroll records and order classroom supplies and materials
  • Monitor behavior, enforce rules, and take corrective action to maintain an effective learning environment
  • Develop lesson plans, select teaching techniques, and determine appropriate classroom instruction levels
