About The Position

The Admissions Specialist - PRN is responsible for interviewing patients or their representatives, entering demographic information into the computer, and obtaining insurance precertification for inpatients and observations. This role also involves pre-admitting patients, answering a multi-line telephone, greeting the public, patients, and visitors, and directing them appropriately. The position requires collecting and entering accurate demographic and financial data, tearing down charts, making copies, and distributing them. A strong understanding of insurance payors is necessary, including verifying Medicaid coverage and assigning PCPs. The specialist will accurately complete procedures for discharges and transfers, check insurance cards for referral and precertification requirements, and perform pre-notification of inpatient stays with insurance. Additionally, the role involves assigning ICD-10 CM and CPT codes for initial authorization of inpatient and observation stays, pre-registering patients, reviewing and correcting patient charts, and operating departmental equipment. The specialist will also handle public address system operations, visitor and patient instructions, posting walk-in payments, reconciling cash drawers, logging patient valuables, and dealing with the public using guest relation skills. Participation in educational programs and adherence to hospital confidentiality policies are expected. The role also includes holiday rotation and filling in on weekends as needed, along with performing other related duties.

Requirements

  • High school or equivalent.
  • One year experience in ICD-10CM and CPT coding experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collects and enters accurate demographic and financial data for patient registrations.
  • Tears down charts, makes required copies, and distributes.
  • Verifies Medicaid coverage and assigns PCP, if necessary.
  • Accurately completes procedures for discharges and transfers.
  • Checks insurance cards for requirements regarding physician referrals and precertification.

  • Pre-registers patients for scheduled admissions and outpatient services, verifying that prior authorization and physician referrals are in place, if required by their insurance company.
  • Reviews and makes corrections to patient charts.
  • Answers multi-line department telephone, transferring calls to the appropriate location and relaying verbal and written messages accurately and promptly.
  • Answers main telephone, when necessary, when that area is not manned.
  • Operates the public address system.
  • Gives instructions to visitors and patients.
  • Uses the computer to post walk-in payments and prints receipts.
  • Writes receipts for General Ledger payments.
  • Reconciles cash drawer with receipts and forwards payments to cashier.
  • Operates and maintains departmental equipment.
  • Logs patient valuables in and out of the hospital safe.
  • Deals with the public utilizing guest relation skills.
  • Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
