About The Position

The Administrator of the Hospice House provides leadership and direction for all clinical and operational functions of the inpatient hospice facility. Reporting to the Vice President of External Services, the Administrator ensures the delivery of high-quality, compassionate care consistent with Medicare CoPs, CHAP accreditation standards, state licensure, and organizational policies. This position serves as the daily on-site leader responsible for patient care coordination, staff management, quality improvement, and facility operations. The Hospice House Administrator is responsible for providing input to the budget, and meeting or exceeding the program’s budget. Promote communication and collaboration in developing, monitoring, evaluating and revising hospice patient care plans. Audit interdisciplinary documentation to assure accuracy and timeliness. The Administrator provides oversight of interdisciplinary hospice house services, including nursing, spiritual care, housekeeping, dining, volunteer services, and related support functions. The Administrator of Hospice partners with executive leadership, clinical teams, and community stakeholders to support census growth, operational excellence, and exceptional patient and family experiences. Requirements

  • Current unencumbered Registered Nurse license in the state of Virginia.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of hospice, palliative care, home health, inpatient, or long-term care clinical experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of leadership, supervisory, or management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of hospice regulations, end-of-life care, symptom management, and interdisciplinary care planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage conflict, hold staff accountable, and drive performance improvement.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze clinical, quality, staffing, and operational data.
  • Strong computer skills, including Electronic Medical Records
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  • Must have experience with all types of office equipment; copier, fax, computers, multi-line phone system
  • Must maintain current CPR certification
  • Flu-vaccinated

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or healthcare-related field
  • Hospice and Palliative Care certification preferred
  • Experience managing an inpatient hospice unit, hospice house, or general inpatient hospice setting
  • Experience with CHAP, ACHC, Joint Commission, CMS, or state survey processes
  • Experience with MatrixCare or other hospice EMR systems
  • Experience in Google Suite, and Microsoft Suite

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all clinical operations within the hospice house, ensuring excellence in patient care and adherence to hospice philosophy.
  • Ensures care is delivered in accordance with the hospice plan of care, patient goals, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards.
  • Ensure compliance with Medicare Conditions of Participation (CoPs), state regulations, and accreditation standards (e.g., CHAP, Joint Commission).
  • Supports timely patient admissions, discharges, level-of-care changes, and coordination with referral sources.
  • Lead QAPI initiatives, including clinical audits, incident review, and performance improvement plans.
  • Reviews incidents, complaints, grievances, medication errors, falls, infections, and other risk events; ensures appropriate follow-up and reporting.
  • Monitor and improve key quality metrics (CAHPS, symptom management, medication safety, infection control).
  • Ensure appropriate level of care determinations (GIP vs routine) and accurate clinical documentation.
  • Maintains strong communication with patients, families, referral partners, and internal departments.
  • Provides direct supervision, coaching, and performance management for Hospice House clinical staff.
  • Ensures staffing levels are appropriate based on census, acuity, regulatory requirements, and patient needs.
  • Oversee orientation, competency validation, ongoing education, and professional development of staff.
  • Holds team members accountable for documentation, attendance, quality of care, communication, and service standards.
  • Promotes a positive work environment focused on teamwork, compassion, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Maintains ongoing survey readiness and participates in audits, mock surveys, and corrective action planning.
  • Ensures timely and accurate clinical documentation, including assessments, care plans, medication records, visit notes, and discharge documentation.
  • Supports responsible management of staffing, supplies, medications, and operational expenses.
  • Monitors census, referral trends, level of care utilization, and occupancy.
  • Partners with business development and hospice leadership to support appropriate referrals and community relationships.
  • Assists with budget planning, productivity expectations, and resource allocation.
  • Ensures operational decisions support both quality care and financial sustainability.
  • Facilitates communication between the Hospice House and the broader hospice program.
  • Collaborates with pharmacy, DME, laboratory, dietary, facilities, housekeeping, and other support services as needed.
  • Optimize bed utilization and drive Average Daily Census (ADC) growth through efficient intake and referral processes.
  • Ensure the facility remains compliant with hospice regulations, state licensure requirements, infection control standards, life safety requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Monitor facility readiness, including equipment, supplies, medication storage, emergency preparedness, and overall environmental safety.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
