About The Position

The NC Disability Determination Services (NCDDS) Division is the state agency responsible for making medical determinations on disability claims for the Social Security Administration and state Medicaid office. The division adjudicates over 140,000 initial disability applications, reconsiderations, reviews for continuing eligibility, and continuing disability review appeals under the Social Security and Supplemental Security Income program and disability applications for Medicaid. Applications are forwarded to Disability Determination Services (DDS) from local Social Security offices or in the case of Medical Assistance claims, from the County Department of Social Services. Agency personnel are responsible for obtaining medical and vocational information on applicants, evaluating the findings under Social Security Administration (SSA) disability criteria and preparing determinations and notices to advise the Applicant of the decision on the claim. The Consultative Examination Control (CEC) unit schedules appointments and authorizes payment for all consultative examinations requested for disability applicants. The examinations are requested by the DDS Case Processing Units, specifically the Disability Analysts. Consultative Examinations (CEs) are scheduled with a panel of physicians, psychologists and other health professionals and facilities to assist in obtaining additional information needed in the disability adjudication process. The CEC unit schedules approximately 80,000 exams and ancillary studies each year, ensuring these examinations are received appropriately, and paid according to the Division fee schedule. The unit provides information to agency staff regarding specific scheduling procedures, payment requirements and availability of specific tests throughout the state. The unit provides guidance to the operations staff to ensure accurate CPT and ICD 10 code selections are correct when scheduling and approving payment for appropriate examinations and tests. This information is critical to the proper processing of complete and accurate disability decisions and ensuring the fiscal integrity of payments to our select panel of medical providers.
