About The Position

The Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (MSRPS) administers benefits for over 397,000 members across 12 retirement systems. This position, located in Baltimore, provides administrative support to the Disability Unit, a high-volume unit responsible for administering disability benefits. The role involves assisting the Medical Board Secretary in establishing new claims, preparing claims for review, and implementing actions related to disability retirement benefits. This position is crucial in reviewing claims to identify necessary information from claimants, employers, or healthcare providers, and in notifying claimants of decisions made by the Medical Board and Board of Trustees. It also involves preparing claims for review by Independent Medical Doctors, requiring strong organizational and communication skills. The position is responsible for issuing decision letters, mailing benefit estimates, and closing claims, ensuring all communications are documented. This position is not telework eligible.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • One year of administrative staff or professional work.
  • One year of demonstrated experience working with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • One year of experience reviewing and processing incoming applications, including eligibility for benefits (e.g. retirement, insurance, health, etc.).
  • One year of previous experience in the medical or legal fields evaluating workers’ compensation, personal injury claims, insurance, or medical malpractice claims.
  • Possession of a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland (if assigned duties requiring vehicle operation).
  • Must undergo and pass a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and reviews applications for disability retirement to determine eligibility and completeness based on retirement law, regulations, and agency policies.
  • Prepares completed disability claims for Medical Board review to assess medical conditions relative to disability under retirement law.
  • Creates and mails disability letters to notify claimants of the Board of Trustees’ decision.
  • Mails estimates to notify claimants of eligible benefit amounts and tracks needed estimates.
  • Creates and mails disability closing letters.
  • Purges closed files and sends them to Office Services for imaging after supervisor approval.
  • Prepares and organizes medical records for review by Independent Medical Evaluation physicians.
  • Ensures all staff have access to the latest information on Board of Trustees' decisions, mailing of estimates, and receipt of retirement application forms by updating both paper files and the CRM case.
  • Responds to copy requests from attorneys and/or claimants, including calculating costs and sending copies after payment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director or Deputy Director of Special Projects.
