About The Position

Operating under the Office of the Chief Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County, the Adult Probation Department administers a wide range of programs covering both standard and specialized probation supervision and pretrial and presentence services. Through its programs, the Adult Probation Department provides the court with pertinent information at many stages of the criminal justice process, enhances public safety, compensates victims of crime and holds offenders accountable while affording them opportunities to make positive changes in their lives. The majority of Adult Probation Department resources are dedicated to probation supervision, while residing in the community. Department probation officers assist individuals in complying with their conditions of supervision through guidance, surveillance and referrals to service providers for treatment, education and employment services.

Requirements

  • Within six months of employment, be a resident of the State of Illinois.
  • Possess a minimum of a High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent experience.
  • Possess the ability to type complete data entry in accordance with assigned work.
  • Ability to maintain a necessary level of completeness.
  • Exhibit an attentiveness to detail.
  • Possess the ability to speak and write English proficiently. The ability to utilize proper grammar, sentence structure and spelling.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to issues of confidentiality and professionalism. Also, must possess excellent filing, organizational and oral and written communication skills.
  • Maintains stability under pressure or opposition.
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks, often changing assignments on short notice.
  • Can establish priorities and a course of action for handling multiple tasks. Arranges in advance to have necessary tools, equipment and supplies available.
  • Possess the ability to exercise independent judgment within prescribed limits and complete miscellaneous projects and problem solving.
  • Possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Ability to master various computer systems utilized by Adult Probation Department.

Responsibilities

  • Assign support personnel, both supervisory and line, to achieve an equitable distribution of divisional workload.
  • Identify staff training needs for performance deficiencies and work with staff to correct the issues.
  • Introduce new policies and/or procedures to staff and monitor adherence to.
  • Instruct staff of specific job responsibilities and provide a plan for back-up.
  • Promote an acceptable work environment by monitoring the allocation of office space and the assignment of personnel.
  • Provide an interpretation of departmental policy and/or procedure when required.
  • Adjudicate all assigned personnel grievances and complaints in a thorough and timely manner in accordance to the respective CBA.
  • Monitor staff accrued time and ensure timely approval of timesheets.
  • Make assigned staff corrective action recommendations to the Deputy Chief Probation Officer.
  • Conduct staff meetings regularly to build effective collaboration for end results.
  • Attend all departmental meetings as required.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
