About The Position

The primary function of the Administrative Director of Surgical Services is to provide leadership and strategic direction for Surgical Service areas by ensuring that quality, cost-effective, and compassionate care is provided to patients, their families/, and customers in accordance with the mission, vision and values of Michigan Medicine. The director is responsible for ensuring operational excellence, adherence to industry standards, maintenance of accreditation requirements, building essential relationships with employed and private physician groups. In collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer Sparrow Hospital, Operational Leadership from the Michigan Medicine system, other Directors, Department Managers, Team Members, and Medical Staff, translates the Hospital and Health System’s strategic vision and plan into a clinical practice vision and plan for Surgical Services. The Administrative Director of Surgical Services is responsible for the management functions of strategic planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and communicating for the Surgical and procedural departments. The Director of Surgical Services is the primary liaison within the University of Michigan Health Sparrow Lansing system for those areas delineated on the Organizational Chart. In addition, the Director represents the Hospital and Health System in nursing operations.

Requirements

Current Michigan Registered Nurse License
A minimum of five (5) years of successful Surgical Services leadership experience in a large healthcare system with multiple locations and specialties
Demonstrates successful leadership: : leading, strategic planning, organization, staffing, communication, and evaluating.
Active involvement in the development and implementation of clinical service plans related to surgical patients including: Surgery, Post-Anesthesia Unit, Outpatient Surgery and/or surgical short stay units.
Prior leadership experience in OR patient care experiences such as: patient care, quality improvement, infection control, education, research, etc.
Knowledge of current standards, regulations, trends, practices in sterile processing
Demonstrates collaborative ability to work in partnership with physicians.
Active participation in physician executive committees, task forces, meetings, recruitment efforts, and the like, that resulted in collaborative action and/or decision-making related to Surgical Services clinical areas

Responsibilities

Provides leadership for Surgical Services.
Leads daily operational huddles both at the start of the day and mid-day huddle.
Leads weekly meetings to review prior week and create plan for coming week.
Collaborates with overall Surgical Services leadership for consolidation plans for the coming weeks.
Leads a monthly Surgical Services operational meeting presenting data on operations, finance, quality and patient experience.
Leads a monthly OR executive committee meeting.
Represents Surgical Services to the Chief Medical Officer Sparrow Hospital, Department Managers, Caregivers, and Medical Staff.
Participates in the development of the institution’s long-range strategic plan and annual operating and financial plans as applied to Surgical Services.
Contributes to the development of the Division of Nursing’s long-range clinical practice plan.
Provides information and advises the Chief Medical Officer Sparrow Hospital regarding current and projected staffing trends, areas of deficiency, and significant activities in the nursing and allied health professions as applicable to surgical services.
Facilitates the development of a collaborative relationship between the physician and nursing staff.
Represents the Hospital and Health System in the community, educational institutions, and professional nursing organizations.
Serves as administrative liaison to assigned Health System areas.
Develops annual goals in alignment with Michigan Medicine goals and objectives
Holds monthly operating room core operations meetings with the appropriate directors to review volumes, finance, operations, quality, patient experience and growth initiatives. During that meeting each core area should review standard reports include sterile processing and essential projects such as first case on-time starts and turn-around time.
Produces monthly communications documents which in collaboration with UMHSL’s communication department will be shared with UMHSL team member community.
Meets with surgeons, anesthesia teams and key stakeholders yearly to review the prior year’s performance, share the strategy for the coming year, elicit feedback and develop unit wide plans for implementation and goal achievement.
Provides leadership and direction for Surgical Services, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, efficient, and patient-centered care while advancing organizational and service line objectives.
Maintains overall accountability for staffing, budget performance, operational effectiveness, and patient care outcomes across all areas of responsibility. Ensures resources are aligned to meet patient, workforce, quality, and financial goals.
Ensures continuous compliance with all applicable regulatory, accreditation, licensure, and organizational requirements, including the Corporate Compliance Program. Monitors operations proactively, identifies areas of risk, and implements corrective actions to maintain organizational readiness and regulatory excellence.
Fosters a culture of transparency, collaboration, and accountability by promoting consistent, open, and bi-directional communication within Surgical Services and across the organization. Builds strong relationships with physicians, leaders, staff, and key stakeholders to support shared goals and successful outcomes.
Leads the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of standardized policies, procedures, and operational practices that promote quality, safety, efficiency, regulatory compliance, and consistent performance across all areas of responsibility.
Champions a culture of continuous improvement by analyzing performance data, identifying opportunities for enhancement, and implementing evidence-based strategies that improve clinical outcomes, patient experience, workforce engagement, and operational performance.
Recruits, develops, mentors, and evaluates Department Managers, supervisors, and team leaders to build a high-performing leadership team and ensure succession planning and leadership continuity.
Provides leadership, coaching, consultation, and guidance to management staff in areas including clinical practice, professional development, performance management, conflict resolution, policy implementation, change management, problem-solving, and strategic business and service line planning.
Establishes collaborative annual goals and objectives that align departmental and divisional priorities with Nursing Services, Surgical Services, and the organization's strategic plan, ensuring measurable outcomes and accountability.
Maintains ongoing consultation and partnership with Department Managers to support operational, clinical, and workforce excellence. Evaluates leadership and departmental performance against established goals and expectations, ensures staff competency, and fosters a culture of engagement, professionalism, accountability, and high morale throughout Surgical Services.
Partners with Department Managers to develop annual operating and capital budgets, monitor financial performance, ensure fiscal accountability, and implement strategies that achieve operational, quality, and financial objectives.
Evaluates and continuously improves nursing care delivery models, operational workflows, and staffing practices to ensure quality outcomes, workforce effectiveness, patient safety, and cost-efficient operations.
Monitors key quality, safety, regulatory, and patient experience metrics across Surgical Services and leads continuous improvement initiatives that enhance clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and operational performance.
Supports leaders in defining roles and responsibilities, determining staffing requirements, establishing productivity standards, developing policies and procedures, designing effective care delivery systems, and maintaining compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and licensure requirements applicable to Surgical Services.
Leads, partners in, and oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategic initiatives, organizational priorities, and special projects that advance Surgical Services and health system goals.
Provides leadership and oversight for daily operations, ensuring achievement of key quality, safety, service, and operational performance metrics, including on-time case starts, operating room turnaround times, schedule utilization, and workflow efficiency. Proactively identifies operational challenges, removes barriers, and implements sustainable solutions to maintain high-performing surgical services operations.
In collaboration with their supervisor, the Director of Surgical Services develops, implements, and achieves annual strategic and operational plans that advance organizational goals related to belonging and inclusion, access, quality and safety, patient experience, growth, financial stewardship, and system integration.
Establishes and executes annual belonging and inclusion strategies that promote an inclusive culture, incorporate regular feedback from key stakeholders, and include a comprehensive communication plan to foster engagement, transparency, and accountability.
Develops and drives initiatives to improve patient access and optimize surgical operations, including on-time case starts, room turnover times, block utilization, staffed prime-time utilization, accommodation of add-on cases, and effective coordination of shared resources such as First Assists, Sterile Processing, and Imaging Services.
Leads quality and safety improvement efforts aligned with Michigan Medicine and UM Health-Sparrow system priorities. Ensures continuous readiness for accreditation surveys and maintains all applicable accreditations, certifications, and regulatory requirements.
Implements strategies that align with UM Health-Sparrow's patient experience goals, promoting exceptional care delivery and measurable improvements in patient, family, and caregiver satisfaction.
Develops and executes annual growth strategies that support organizational objectives, expand service capacity, and strengthen the surgical services portfolio while maintaining operational excellence.
Ensures responsible financial management through the development and execution of sustainable operating plans, effective resource utilization, budget accountability, and achievement of financial performance targets.
Advances organizational integration initiatives by aligning surgical services operations with UM Health-Sparrow and Michigan Medicine strategies, fostering collaboration across departments, service lines, and system partners to achieve shared goals.
