About The Position

The Medical Physicist provides clinical medical physics support for the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center (HHCC) of University of Michigan Health-Sparrow in Lansing, Michigan. The position joins a multidisciplinary team of 2 radiation oncologists, 3 medical physicists, and 4 dosimetrists supporting treatment of more than 800 patients annually. The Medical Physicist is responsible for the safe, accurate, and effective application of radiation physics in external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy, including equipment quality assurance, commissioning, treatment planning support, clinical implementation of new technologies, and regulatory and accreditation compliance.

Requirements

Master of Science (MS) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in medical physics or physics required.
Board certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or certified within 3 years of hire or transfer.
Strong computer and technical skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team environment.
Knowledge of radiation therapy quality assurance, treatment planning, radiation safety, and applicable regulatory and accreditation standards.
Ability to evaluate and implement new radiation therapy procedures, techniques, systems, and technologies.

Nice To Haves

Three years of recent clinical medical physics experience preferred.
Experience supporting external beam radiation therapy, treatment planning, equipment commissioning, and quality assurance, preferred.
Stereotactic treatment and brachytherapy experience, preferred.
Candidates who have recently completed a CAMPEP-accredited residency program and are board eligible will also be considered.

Responsibilities

Perform calibration, commissioning, and ongoing quality assurance of Radiation Oncology equipment.
Conduct acceptance testing and commissioning of new radiation therapy equipment and systems.
Provide patient-specific treatment planning and dosimetric support for external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy.
Participate in brachytherapy procedures, including treatment planning, delivery support, and quality assurance.
Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, and institutional quality and safety standards.
Develop, implement, and evaluate new radiation therapy procedures, techniques, and technologies to improve patient care.
Collaborate with physicians, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the safe and effective delivery of radiation therapy.
Provide education and training to clinical staff, residents, and students, as appropriate.
Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives and support continuous process improvement.
Support clinical physics operations for current and evolving technologies, including IGRT, SGRT, IMRT, VMAT, SBRT, adaptive SBRT, HDR brachytherapy, and the transition to Varian Aria/Eclipse and new Varian treatment platforms.
Utilize and support physics quality assurance systems and equipment, including SNC SRS MapCHECK, ArcCHECK, IC Profiler, DQA4, DQA-MR, SunSCAN 3D, SunCHECK Machine, and associated chambers, electrometers, diode detectors, and phantoms.
