About The Position

This position involves teaching SFL 359: Child Life in Healthcare Settings, a 3-credit, semester-long class to approximately 40 undergraduate students in the School of Family Life. The class is scheduled for Mondays from 2:00-4:50 pm for the Fall 2026 semester. The course aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of child life practice in healthcare settings, including its history, theoretical underpinnings, ethical considerations, and practical applications.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD is required.
  • Child Life Specialist certification is required.
  • The required degree must be completed by the start date.
  • Must relocate and/or reside in Utah for the duration of employment.
  • All new employees who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be required to hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend.
  • All employees are required to abide by the university's Honor Code and Dress & Grooming Standards.
  • Successful candidates are expected to support and contribute to the academic and religious missions of the university within the context of the principles and doctrines of the affiliated church.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in Human Development, Family Studies, Marriage and Family Therapy, or related field is preferred.
  • Teaching experience at the university level in Human Development, Family Studies, or Marriage and Family Therapy is preferred.
  • Preference is given to qualified candidates who are members in good standing of the affiliated church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Responsibilities

  • Teach SFL 359: Child Life in Healthcare Settings to approximately 40 undergraduate students.
  • Identify the elements of child life practice in healthcare settings, including historical review and professional development.
  • Use developmental theory to assess the impact of illness, injury, and healthcare experiences on children and families.
  • Explain key principles of patient and family-centered care in relation to child life practice.
  • Compare historical and current perspectives on psychological preparation and therapeutic play.
  • Describe the vital services child life specialists provide to children and families.
  • Describe and apply the code of ethics for the child life profession.
  • Explain the importance of maintaining professional competence and staying current on best practices.
  • Demonstrate how ethical standards in child life practice are spiritually strengthening and build character.
  • Explain the contents of official documents from the Association for Child Life Professionals and Child Life Certification Commission (ACLP/CLCC).
  • Discuss topics related to pediatric grief from death and loss.
