About The Position

This position involves teaching one or more undergraduate Navajo language courses at the Center for Language Studies. The role requires providing supplemental instruction, developing course materials, and engaging with students to support their language learning. The instructor will also be responsible for setting up course materials on the BYU Learning Suite platform and participating in professional development. This position requires the successful candidate to relocate and/or reside in Utah for the duration of their employment. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (must be obtained by start date).
  • Sufficient proficiency in the target language (Navajo) to teach foundation and lower-division courses.
  • Sufficient proficiency in English to teach effectively, counsel students, benefit from professional development, and communicate professionally.
  • Willingness to receive additional training and professional development in language pedagogy.
  • Working proficiency in computer-based software, including Microsoft Office and internet applications.
  • Ability to learn and successfully use Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as BYU's Learning Suite.

Nice To Haves

  • Academic degree in the target language and/or linguistics.
  • Successful experience teaching the target language to speakers of other languages.
  • Adequate understanding of Second Language Education theory and language-teaching pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of language-proficiency assessment criteria and testing procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Teach one or more undergraduate Navajo language courses as assigned by the Center for Language Studies.
  • Meet with students one-on-one or in small groups to provide supplemental instruction and guidance on course content.
  • Participate in professional development training workshops and respond to recommendations for improvement.
  • Write a course syllabus and set up course materials on the BYU Learning Suite platform.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to communications and assignments from the Center for Language Studies.
  • Attend in-service training in AUG/SEP 2026.
