About The Position

This position involves teaching undergraduate Cebuano language courses at the Center for Language Studies. The role requires proficiency in Cebuano to teach foundation and upper-division courses, as well as strong English communication skills for teaching, counseling students, and professional interaction. The instructor will also participate in professional development, develop course materials, and utilize the BYU Learning Suite platform. This position requires the successful candidate to relocate and/or reside in Utah for the duration of their employment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree by the start date.
  • Sufficient proficiency in Cebuano to teach foundation and upper-division courses.
  • Sufficient proficiency in English to teach the target language effectively to English-speaking students.
  • Sufficient proficiency in English to counsel and motivate students regarding language learning.
  • Willingness to benefit from professional development workshops.
  • Willingness to receive additional training and professional development in the field of language pedagogy.
  • Working proficiency in computer-based software, including Microsoft Office and internet applications.
  • Ability to learn and successfully use Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as BYU's Learning Suite.
  • Must be able to relocate and/or reside in Utah for the duration of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Academic degree in the target language and/or linguistics.
  • Successful experience teaching the target language to speakers of other languages.
  • Adequate understanding of Second Language Education theory, and language-teaching pedagogy to develop curriculum materials and to plan lesson activities in languages where commercially published textbooks and instructional materials are seldom available.
  • Knowledge of language-proficiency assessment criteria and the testing procedures needed to prepare and administer language tests and assign grades accurately and fairly.

Responsibilities

  • Teach one or more undergraduate Cebuano language courses as assigned by the Center for Language Studies.
  • Meet with students one-on-one or in small groups to provide supplemental instruction and guidance on course content.
  • Participate in professional development training workshops and respond to recommendations for improvement.
  • Write a course syllabus and set up course materials on the BYU Learning Suite platform.
  • Grade all Cebuano Challenge Exams completed during same semester taught.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to communications and assignments from the Center for Language Studies.
  • Attend in-service training in AUG/SEP 2026.
