About The Position

The Frederick Gunn School is seeking Adjunct Music Teachers for its Arts Department. These positions involve providing private music lessons to students in grades 9-12 and post-graduates. The curriculum focuses on fundamental techniques, music theory, and instrument-specific skills, while also encouraging exploration of various musical styles. Requirements

  • A minimum of one year of experience teaching high school students (beginner through intermediate levels).
  • Ability to teach across a variety of musical styles and genres.
  • Standard background and fingerprinting procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching jazz-specific piano skills including chord voicings, comping patterns, improvisation, scales and modes, ii–V–I progressions, and stylistic fluency (swing, Latin, and contemporary styles).
  • Experience teaching violin/viola, including developing a characteristic sound, technical facility, and musical expression.
  • Experience teaching double bass, including jazz (walking bass lines).

Responsibilities

  • Provide private music lessons once per week per student, lasting 40-60 minutes.
  • Teach fundamental technique, tone production, embouchure development, breath support and control, articulation, range development, flexibility, scales, melodic and rhythmic sight-reading, and basic music theory.
  • Address instrument care and maintenance, tuning, and ensemble skills.
  • Teach across a variety of musical styles and genres (including classical, jazz, and contemporary styles).
  • Potentially lead sectional rehearsals, cover ensemble classes, or perform with school ensembles (compensated separately).
