About The Position

The Urban Studies Program at Barnard College seeks a part-time instructor to teach undergraduate courses during the 2026-2027 academic year. The instructor will be responsible for teaching two specific courses: URBS UN3310 Race, Space, and Urban Schools in Fall 2026 and URBS UN3451 Environmental Justice: Gender, Race, Class and the Environment in Spring 2027. Exact instructional assignments and other academic responsibilities are determined by the Chair or Director.

Requirements

• Terminal degree in a related discipline, with all requirements for the degree completed by the time of hiring offer.

• Statement of interest (including teaching philosophy, most relevant prior teaching experience, advanced pedagogical or relevant training)
• Identify three references, including one with direct knowledge of their teaching capabilities (for finalists).

Responsibilities

• Teach URBS UN3310 Race, Space, and Urban Schools in Fall 2026.
• Teach URBS UN3451 Environmental Justice: Gender, Race, Class and the Environment in Spring 2027.
• Apply course learnings to students' own experiences and current debates over urban policies and public schools.
• Extend students' understanding of key anthropological and sociological perspectives on urban inequality in the United States.
• Introduce students to critical theory.
• Critically analyze environmental justice case studies.
• Develop students' understanding of the complex relationships among urban populations and the social, political, and economic processes that lead to environmental inequality.
• Explore how racism is foundational to environmental exploitation.
• Consider why global struggles for racial justice are crucial for protecting both people and the earth.
• Explore how urban planning and economic development policies create environmental inequalities in the US and globally.
