Prepare for and teach THTR 124-01, Intro to Sound for the Stage, in the International Theater Program in the Department of English during Spring 2027, from January 16, 2027, to May 15, 2027. The instructor will design and deliver curriculum and instructional materials and assess student learning by grading assignments, lab proficiency, and tests. Hands-on supervision of Sound Labs, where students work on crews to realize a professional sound design, is vital. The instructor will administer instructional trainings, follow Program policies, hold suitable office hours, and advise students in connection with the course. The course introduces students with varying levels of prior experience to the knowledge and technical proficiency needed to support departmental productions. Students should learn to work on a sound crew and understand the components of a stage sound design, from assembling a sound system to programming a cue list of sound effects. Course topics include production teams and sound staff, microphones (including wireless mic’ing), speakers (including rigging from height), amplifiers, cables and cable management, processors, analog and digital consoles, documentation such as speaker plans and signal flow, and building an appropriately scaled system from scratch. The course may also introduce the sound design process, including script analysis, research, building cues, and working with directors and design teams; technical proficiency is its main focus. The course meets in person on Thursdays from 11:05 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. on the University of Rochester’s River Campus.
