About The Position

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks adjunct faculty to teach on-site in San Diego, CA for the Business program. Specifically, the course Building Sustainable Futures (BMGT 240) which explores how businesses achieve long-term sustainability by integrating responsible practices into core operations. The goal is to examine the environmental and societal impacts of business activities and conduct sustainability audits, develop circular economy strategies, and improve operational efficiency. Emphasis is on balancing profitability with ethical decision-making, stakeholder expectations, and climate resilience. Case studies and applied projects are used to create actionable strategies to align business practices with sustainability goals and generate value for organizations and society. UMGC is a mission-driven institution committed to adult learners, serving 90,000 students globally, including a significant number of active-duty service members, reservists, National Guard members, veterans, and family members. The typical UMGC student is an adult learner juggling a career, family, and other priorities. As an adjunct faculty member, the role involves actively engaging students, guiding them in collaborative and project-based learning, providing constructive feedback, demonstrating subject-matter expertise, and offering feedback on curricular improvements.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Business or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Professional experience in Sustainability, Business Strategy, or related fields.
  • Directly relevant, current and active industry professional experience in Business or closely related field.
  • Successful completion of UMGC's online two-week new faculty orientation, FacDev 411, as a condition of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching adult learners online and in higher education is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Actively engage students through frequent interaction that motivates them to succeed, and conveys a genuine energy and enthusiasm for their learning.
  • Guide students in active collaboration and the application of their learning in problem- and project-based learning demonstrations.
  • Provide rich and regular constructive feedback, utilizing rubrics effectively for the assessment of student work, and acknowledging student accomplishments.
  • Demonstrate relevant and current subject-matter expertise, and help students connect concepts across their academic program.
  • Provide feedback to your program chair on possible curricular improvements.
