About The Position

Holyoke Community College is seeking adjunct faculty to teach in-person sections of SOC 110 Introduction to Sociology and/or SOC 235 Sociology of the Family for the Fall 2026 semester. The Introduction to Sociology course covers scientific examination of human social phenomena, including interaction, culture, social inequality, and globalization. The Sociology of the Family course provides a sociological framework for understanding families in contemporary and historical contexts, examining their intersection with economic, political, technological, social, and cultural influences. Adjunct faculty are responsible for providing a quality learning experience, distributing and reviewing the course syllabus, utilizing active learning methods, staying current in their field, arranging for necessary materials, accurately recording student data, and supporting students' learning goals by focusing on outcomes, accommodating differences, and maintaining academic integrity. They are also expected to recommend campus services and attend all scheduled classes, notifying their supervisor and providing an alternate assignment if a class must be missed.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Sociology or related area
  • Firm grounding in the subject matter of the course being offered
  • Experience using an online learning management system to support classroom instruction (Canvas preferred)
  • Commitment to and demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff & student body
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States

Responsibilities

  • Provide a quality learning experience for students on a semester basis.
  • Distribute and review the course syllabus during the first class meeting.
  • Forward a course syllabus to the dean no later than the end of the first week of classes.
  • Utilize active learning methods and a variety of instructional strategies to assist learners in meeting course objectives.
  • Remain abreast of ongoing developments and practices in their professional content area(s).
  • Arrange for the acquisition and preparation of appropriate materials and equipment necessary to meet course objectives in collaboration with the area dean.
  • Be prompt and accurate in the recording and reporting of student data, including assessment of student performance and final grade reports.
  • Be supportive of students' learning goals by focusing on student learning outcomes, taking into account student needs and abilities, becoming familiar with academic and social support services, making reasonable provisions to accommodate individual differences, maintaining academic integrity, and making themselves available to assist students.
  • Recommend campus services to students as needed (e.g., library services, financial aid, counseling, supplemental instruction).
  • Attend all scheduled classes.
  • Notify the supervisor or designee and provide an alternate assignment if a class must be missed.
