About The Position

Geneva College invites applications for an Adjunct instructor in Sociology in the Department of History, Political Science and Sociology. The position begins August 2026 and will remain open, until filled. Following is a complete job description with required skills, abilities, education, and experience. Requirements

  • Must be able to perform the following: talking, hearing, and seeing.
  • Must have sufficient manual dexterity to be able to operate all office equipment including, but not limited to computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and telephones.
  • Must be able to reason, analyze, prioritize, conceptualize, make judgments, and solve problems.
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited U.S. college/university or international equivalent in sociology, community development, or related field.
  • Candidates must be able to teach about and discuss appropriate content that facilitate deeper student understanding of the theoretical frameworks of social theory and the basics of reading social science data as they pertain to an understanding of the theme of “society” within the field of sociology. This includes ways in which theory and data are experienced in the world.
  • Assist students in understanding how theory and practice in sociology is relevant to their callings in institutions such as family, church, media, government, education, and the marketplace. This includes exploring ways in which social theory is pertinent to their major field of study.
  • Have a significant understanding of a Christian perspective of social theory.
  • Must be a thoughtful and articulate Christian and an active member of a Protestant evangelical Christian church.
  • Must understand and support the College’s “Foundational Concepts of Christian Education” by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in sociology, community development, or a related field is preferred.
  • Previous higher education teaching experience preferred. but not required.
  • Experience in integrating student experience of academic-based service learning in the classroom.
  • Preference will be given to the candidate who supports and has an articulate understanding of the Reformed faith.

Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned contact hours per semester.
  • Adequately prepare all course materials and lessons.
  • Provide each student with clear course expectations, evaluations, and timelines through carefully written topical outlines and approved syllabus per faculty established guidelines.
  • Provide interesting and relevant assignments for students that demonstrate learning outcomes in a real-life setting.
  • Suitably challenge, engage, support, and communicate with students to encourage their participation and learning while maintaining mutual value and respect.
  • Provide timely grades to students through college software and upload mid-term and final grades by college deadlines.
  • Respond to student questions on a timely basis.
  • Ensure course and program learning outcomes are delivered as defined by the syllabus.
  • Exhibits behavior that is consistent with and supportive of Geneva’s mission, vision, core values, and standards of conduct.
