About The Position

The College of Lake County (CLC) is seeking an Adjunct Faculty member to teach horticulture courses. This role involves teaching plant identification, landscape construction methods, project management, and horticulture business operations. Responsibilities include delivering lectures, assessing student learning, assigning grades, and preparing lesson plans. The courses must be taught in accordance with approved program descriptions, outlines, textbooks, and syllabi. The faculty member will utilize academic software such as Canvas, PowerPoint, and Word. The position requires following departmental safety guidelines, selecting and maintaining curriculum, and conducting all classes for the scheduled time. The faculty member will observe and evaluate student performance, provide timely feedback, and offer instructional support. Referrals to specialized college services and availability for student consultation via phone or email are expected. A syllabus including course objectives, learning outcomes, attendance policies, texts, timelines, and evaluation criteria must be provided. Maintaining records, submitting grades electronically, and resolving student complaints according to college policies are also part of the role. The faculty member will assist in developing and administering measures of student academic achievement and learning outcomes, and use feedback from course evaluations to improve teaching. Participation in program advisory boards and college committees is also expected.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture -AND- 2 years of tested experience
  • Associate degree in horticulture -AND- 5 years of tested experience

  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Teach horticulture plant identification, landscape construction methods and project management and horticulture business operations.
  • Teach lecture, assess student learning and assign course grades.
  • Prepare lecture and lesson plans, teach lecture and respond to and grade student work.
  • Use appropriate academic software (e.g. Canvas, Power Point, Word, etc.)
  • Deliver course content using a variety of teaching styles.
  • Follow departmental safety guidelines.
  • Select, prepare and maintain current curriculum, course outlines and printed and non-printed instructional materials.
  • Revise and update course content as needed.
  • Conduct all classes in accordance with an established and current course syllabus and approved textbooks (and/or related instructional material).
  • Meet all classes for the scheduled time.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions or examinations.
  • Provide feedback in a timely manner on student progress.
  • Provide instructional support to the students.
  • Refer students, when appropriate, to sources of specialized services within the College.
  • Be available for student consultation through phone or email.
  • Provide the Division and the students a syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, attendance policies in line with those of the college, texts and readings, timelines and evaluation criteria, and any other information required by College, Division, or departmental policy.
  • Maintain office/discipline/grade/division records as required by the College.
  • Submit all grades (mid/final) electronically prior to the required deadlines.
  • Provide the Registrar appropriate grade records.
  • Use the appropriate College policies and procedures to resolve and document student complaints, concerns and problems.
  • Assist in developing and administering discipline-appropriate measures of student academic achievement, use departmental testing instruments as provided.
  • Administer other instruments designed to measure student learning outcomes as requested and required by the department.
  • Provide all results as requested.
  • Encourage students to submit course evaluations, review course evaluations when available and use feedback to improve course delivery.
  • Participate, when appropriate, in the formation and meetings of program advisory boards, college, division, and department committees.
