About The Position

Holyoke Community College is seeking adjunct faculty to teach COM 126: History and Criticism of Film in Fall 2026. This course introduces the study and history of film, exploring how films create meaning through technical and stylistic elements such as camera work, lighting, sound, editing, storyline, genres, and semiotic analysis. It also provides an overview of major film movements and representative films, aiming to familiarize students with film analysis methods, contextualize films historically and thematically, and foster an understanding of cinema's cultural and aesthetic contributions. Adjunct faculty are responsible for delivering a quality learning experience, reporting to a dean, and facilitating student learning. This includes distributing and reviewing the syllabus, utilizing active learning strategies, staying current in their field, preparing necessary materials, accurately recording student data, and supporting student learning goals by focusing on outcomes, accommodating needs, and making students aware of campus support services. Adjunct faculty are expected to attend all scheduled classes and follow procedures for absences, including providing an alternate assignment if necessary.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Communication, Film or related area
  • Firm grounding in the subject matter of the course being offered
  • Experience using an online learning management system to support classroom instruction (Canvas preferred)
  • Commitment to and demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff & student body.
  • Eligibility for ENG 101
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Provides instruction-related duties and responsibilities in a timely manner and in accordance with the mission, policies and procedures of the college.
  • Distributes and reviews the course syllabus during the first class meeting.
  • Forwards the dean no later than the end of the first (1st) week of classes in each session a course syllabus.
  • Utilizes active learning methods and a variety of instructional strategies designed to assist the learner in meeting the objectives of the course.
  • Remains abreast of ongoing developments and practices in his/her professional content area(s).
  • Arranges for the acquisition and preparation of appropriate materials and equipment in a timely manner necessary to meet course objectives in collaboration with the area dean.
  • Is prompt and accurate in the recording and reporting of student data including assessment of student performance; including final grade reports.
  • Supports students' learning goals by focusing on student learning outcomes, taking into account the needs and abilities of the students, becoming familiar with academic and social support, making reasonable provisions to accommodate individual differences, maintaining the academic integrity of the college, and making himself/herself available to assist students in achieving their learning goals.
  • Is aware of and recommends campus services to students as needed.
  • Attends all schedule classes.
  • Follows appropriate procedures by notifying the supervisor or the supervisor's designee and is responsible by providing an alternate assignment if it is necessary to miss a class.
