About The Position

Holyoke Community College is seeking adjunct faculty to teach Education classes within the Health and Professional Studies Division. Adjunct faculty are responsible for providing a quality learning experience for students on a semester basis. They report to the Division Dean and perform instruction-related duties in accordance with college policies. The role involves facilitating learning, distributing and reviewing course syllabi, utilizing active learning methods and diverse instructional strategies, staying current with developments in their field, and collaborating with the area dean for materials and equipment. Adjunct faculty must be prompt and accurate in recording and reporting student data, including assessments and final grades. They are expected to be supportive of students' learning goals by focusing on outcomes, considering student needs and abilities, familiarizing themselves with academic and social support services, accommodating individual differences, maintaining academic integrity, and making themselves available to assist students. Faculty are also expected to recommend campus services like library, financial aid, and counseling. Adjunct faculty must attend all scheduled classes and follow procedures for notifying supervisors and providing alternate assignments if a class must be missed.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Education or related area
  • Massachusetts teacher's licensure or certification
  • Minimum five years of classroom teaching experience
  • Commitment to and demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff & student body
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States

Responsibilities

  • Provide a quality learning experience for students on a semester basis.
  • Report to the Division Dean and perform instruction-related duties in a timely manner and in accordance with college mission, policies, and procedures.
  • Act as a teacher and facilitator of learning for students.
  • Distribute and review the course syllabus during the first class meeting.
  • Forward a course syllabus to the dean no later than the end of the first week of classes.
  • Utilize active learning methods and a variety of instructional strategies to assist learners in meeting course objectives.
  • Engage in activities such as cooperative learning, experiential learning, writing for learning, and critical thinking initiatives.
  • Remain abreast of ongoing developments and practices in their professional content area(s).
  • Arrange for the acquisition and preparation of appropriate materials and equipment necessary to meet course objectives in collaboration with the area dean.
  • Be prompt and accurate in the recording and reporting of student data, including assessment of student performance and final grade reports.
  • Be supportive of students' learning goals by focusing on student learning outcomes, taking into account student needs and abilities, and becoming familiar with academic and social support.
  • Make reasonable provisions to accommodate individual differences.
  • Maintain the academic integrity of the college.
  • Make himself/herself available to assist students in achieving their learning goals.
  • Recommend campus services to students as needed (e.g., library, financial aid, counseling, supplemental instruction).
  • Attend all scheduled classes.
  • Follow appropriate procedures for notifying the supervisor or designee and providing an alternate assignment if a class must be missed.
