About The Position

Sullivan University is seeking an Adjunct Culinary Instructor for its Lexington location. This role is part-time and focuses on being student-centered, acting as a teaching mentor to guide students through their academic programs to completion. The core responsibilities involve instruction and assessment of student learning. The ideal candidate will have experience in a commercial kitchen, the ability to apply formal culinary education in a classroom setting, and the capacity to stand for extended periods. A passion for cooking and student success is essential, along with a willingness to teach classes, work individually with students to refine their cooking skills, and potentially train staff. Experience with ServSafe or e-Food handler, proficiency in quality and quantity cookery, managerial communication, organizational skills, and food inventory/procurement are preferred.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10-years industry experience in culinary, baking, hospitality, or nutrition.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Must possess excellent leadership, customer service, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and efficiently while meeting required deadlines.
  • Ability to function efficiently in a stressful work environment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, to include evenings, weekends, and travel to multiple locations as dictated by the course schedule.
  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time, as well as to move about the campus.
  • Must be able to hear and speak well enough to communicate with students, faculty, and staff face to face, via the telephone, and through electronic medium (e.g., email, recordings, virtual meetings, etc.).
  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree preferred, Bachelor's with industry experience considered.
  • ServSafe & Professional certification a plus.
  • Professional current specialty certification helpful.
  • Familiarity with a commercial kitchen.
  • Ability to apply formal culinary education training in a classroom environment.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates student learning within face-to-face, online, hybrid, and/or HyFlex learning environments.
  • Delivers effective and career-relevant instruction.
  • Provides an environment conducive to learning.
  • Evaluates student learning for all assigned classes.
  • Responds to student inquiries and grades all assignments in a timely manner.
  • Engages students using student engagement instructional techniques (e.g., collaborative learning, experiential learning, problem-based learning).
  • Delivers course curriculum utilizing the University’s learning management system.
  • Participates in course and program level learning assessments, including defining student learning outcomes, administering measures, evaluating student performance, and suggesting improvements.
  • Works with the Dean, Department Chair, and/or Program Director in the development and revision of course maps and course materials.
  • Schedules, supervises, debriefs, and evaluates students in clinical, externship, observation, field experience, and similar settings.
  • Participates in student retention efforts, reaching out to students with excessive absences, documenting activities, and informing students of University services.
  • Communicates availability (e.g., office hours) to all students via email, phone, or other personal contact.
  • Attends graduation (encouraged).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
