About The Position

The Art and Art History Department at Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) seeks an adjunct instructor to teach a beginning-level ceramics course for the fall 2026 semester. SJU is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to students, and demonstrates the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. SJU offers a wide variety of degree programs and appoints part-time, non-tenure track adjunct instructors on a semester-to-semester basis with no guarantee of consecutive appointments. Re-appointment is based on university need, student enrollment, and satisfactory performance. Teaching responsibilities are assigned by the department chair. Compensation for adjunct instructors is commensurate with educational credentials, professional experience, and instructional background. Adjunct instructors are bound to the terms and conditions of employment at Saint Joseph’s University, including the Faculty Handbook.

Requirements

Master’s degree in studio art.
Demonstrated commitment to promoting belonging, inclusion, and multicultural competence in an educational and work environment and must be willing to contribute to the College's strategic plan of inclusion.
Access to a personal computer with virus protection that can connect to the internet outside of the work location (i.e., office, classroom, college campus).
Submission of a CV that includes dates of employment, a list of previous courses taught (and how many times each section was taught), and designation as instructor of record or teaching assistant.
Submission of a 1-2 page cover letter which addresses the instruction of ceramics experience.
Link to personal portfolio (at least 5 works) demonstrating ability to teach ceramics.
Successful completion of a background check and degree verification.

Nice To Haves

Previous teaching experience (instructor of record) at the post-secondary level.
Experience with a vast array of Ceramics practices.
Knowledge of non-western practices.

Responsibilities

Provide in-person instruction on ceramic handbuilding techniques, glazing and surfacing of assigned pieces, concept development, and ceramic terminology for assigned courses.
Prepare for in-class activities, evaluate students’ work, and conduct regular consultations with students both in and outside of class and/or online.
Provide each student with a written course syllabus and class outline at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook.
Regularly upload and monitor class documents, assignments, and communications through Canvas.
Respond in a timely manner to students’ emails.
Maintain accurate class records and class assessments required by the college.
Submit, when due, mid-term and final grade reports.
Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices.
Maintain office hours each week, at 1 hour per week per section.
Maintain a safe and orderly classroom.
Observe, support, and enforce the regulations, policies, and programs of the University and College of Arts & Sciences.
Work cooperatively within the college community.
Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias.
Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual.
