About The Position

BWXT's Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers. This is a Summer 2027 internship opportunity where innovative thinking is fostered and barrier-free teamwork is embraced. The intern will be responsible for developing novel manufacturing techniques of ceramics or metals through a one-off a few technologies BWXT is evaluating. These include both indirect and direct additive manufacturing technologies including electron beam, laser, and lithography-based technologies.

Requirements

  • Must be a currently enrolled student pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD degree in a technical field of study (e.g., Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineer, Nuclear Engineer, Physics, Chemistry etc.).
  • Must have strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to multi-task.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure or experience in the processing and microstructure characterization of ceramic, metal, or composite materials.
  • Experience in metal, plastic, or ceramic additive manufacturing technologies.
  • Experience in polymer formulation and thermal/photoinitiation.
  • Enthusiastic attitude for tackling new challenges and learning new technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of an additive manufacturing development program.
  • Generate/improve standard operating procedures and perform a safety analysis of the technology.
  • Develop and execute a development plan for the maturation of the selected additive technology.
