About The Position

The Adaptive Physical Education Teacher will design a specialized physical education curriculum adapted to the needs of the children. The role involves creating a climate of warmth, acceptance, and encouragement that fosters growth and development in all children regardless of disability. This position requires understanding and promoting the Elizabeth Seton Children’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values, and ensuring their application with organizational policies and procedures. The teacher will demonstrate knowledge of NYS Learning Standards through the development and implementation of weekly lesson plans that address individual student goals and strengthen learning continuity between home and school. An adaptive physical education (APE) program, including aquatic programming, will be designed in collaboration with a transdisciplinary team to meet the IEP goals of each child. The role integrates NYS Learning Standards into effective goals and practices for positive child outcomes and involves participating in meetings concerning each child's needs related to their APE program. A safe and organized learning environment will be created, ensuring APE materials and equipment are maintained, inventoried, and used appropriately. The teacher will lead a team of paraprofessional staff in carrying out lesson plans and adhere to daily school schedules at both Yonkers and White Plains campuses, including two weekly 2-hour sessions between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm in White Plains. Accurate record-keeping and IEP Goal tracking documentation are required. The teacher may act as a substitute in the classroom when needed and actively participate in professional development planning. Adherence to standards for customer service, quality improvement, professional development, environmental, safety, and infection control practices, confidentiality, corporate compliance, and all other John A. Coleman policies and procedures is expected, along with attending mandatory in-services. Other tasks to support school operations may be assigned by Administration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education
  • NYS certification in Physical Education
  • Complete required practicum in Physical Education
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to relate to families and work collaboratively with other agency representatives
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language fluently
  • Must meet or exceed all health standards and requirements for the position as established by NYDOH and all other regulatory agencies
  • Must meet the general health requirements set fourth by the policies of this School, which includes a medical and physical examination
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of thirty-five (35) pounds
  • Perform tasks that may involve exposure to the children’s blood/body fluids
  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation of children, if necessary

Nice To Haves

  • 12-18 credit concentration in Adapted Physical Education preferred
  • Master’s Degree in Adapted Physical Education, preferred
  • Concentration in Adapted Physical Education preferred
  • Minimum of one-year experience in related setting working with children with multiple disabilities preferred

Responsibilities

  • Participate in meetings concerning the needs of each child as related to his/her APE program
  • Create an organized and safe learning environment to ensure that APE materials and equipment are maintained in good condition, properly inventoried and used according to the physical abilities of each child
  • Lead team of paraprofessional staff in carrying out lesson plans
  • Adhere to daily school schedule at both the Yonkers and White Plains campuses including 2 weekly session of 2 hours each between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm in White Plains
  • Maintain accurate record keeping and IEP Goal tracking documentation as required by SED and Coleman School Policy for quality assurance and accountability
  • Act as substitute in the classroom when vacancy or absence requires
  • Actively participate in the creation and implementation of an individual and school-wide Professional Development Plan that inspires personal growth, informs teaching practices and promotes understanding of the NYS Standards
  • Carry out standards for customer service; quality improvement; professional development; environmental, safety and infection control practices; confidentiality, corporate compliance and all other John A. Coleman policies and procedures; attend all mandatory in-services to ensure regulatory compliance and best practices in working with students and their families
  • Perform other tasks to support the operations of the school as assigned by Administration
