Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited university
  • Valid Texas Physical Education Teaching Certificate, Physical Education or Special Education Certificate (EC-12) issued by State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC)
  • Knowledge of subjects assigned
  • Knowledge of Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to obtain ESL certification within one year of hire

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Certified Adapted Physical Educator (CAPE) preferred
  • ESL certification preferred
  • Three (3) years of teaching experience preferred
  • Experience with special education students preferred

Responsibilities

  • Applies knowledge of the purpose, philosophy, and legal foundations of evaluation, special education and adapted physical education.
  • Demonstrates ethical and professional practices and responsibilities as required by the Texas Educators’ code of ethics.
  • Develops collaborative relationships with families, educators, the school, the community, outside agencies, and related service personnel.
  • Applies knowledge of student assessment and evaluation, program planning, and instructional decision making.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of eligibility criteria and procedures for identifying students who may not safely or successfully participate in unrestricted activities during physical education and determining the presence of educational need.
  • Selects, administers and interprets appropriate formal and informal assessments and evaluations.
  • Demonstrates skills necessary for scheduling, time management, and organization.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate curricula and instructional strategies for individuals with disabilities.
  • Participates on a multi-disciplinary team that determines special education eligibility for students.
  • Serves as a resource to campuses to ensure the district is in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations associated with special education.
  • Consults with administrators, support personnel and teachers on campuses to ensure IEPs are implemented.
  • Provides training to district staff and parents of students with disability with regards to who may not safely or successfully participate in unrestricted activities during physical education.
  • Supervises graduate students, clinical fellows (interns), adapted physical education, as well as mentors new hire adapted physical educators as assigned by supervisor.
  • Provides appropriate service delivery models (e.g., variations in frequency, intensity, duration, and setting based on student needs) consistent with a wide variety of individual student needs.
  • Develops and implements appropriate adapted physical education goals and objectives based on data (formal and informal).
  • Conducts conferences with parents, students and teachers when needed to discuss concerns regarding the student’s program.
  • Evaluates and report student progress consistent with district expectations (end of every grading period).
  • Works collaboratively with teachers to develop adapted physical education schedules, and provide ongoing support for students in the classroom.
  • Attends team meetings on campus and keep classroom teachers informed of the individual student’s adapted physical education needs.
  • Designs and implements community-based adapted physical education instructional programs.
  • Adheres to the policies outlined in the school district’s adapted physical education program guide (if applicable).
  • Assumes responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and may sponsor outside activities approved by the school.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Department of Special Education.
  • Follows district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Participates in professional development, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
