About The Position

MercyOne Genesis DeWitt Medical Center is seeking a Registered Nurse to provide and direct safe, effective, and culturally competent care for patients with acute medical and surgical conditions. This role utilizes evidence-based practice and critical thinking to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate outcome-based care. The Acute Care RN manages a diverse patient population including post-operative, medical, telemetry, and neurologic patients. This position supervises and coordinates care provided by LPNs, Patient Care Assistants, and other nursing team members, and facilitates communication with physicians, patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members. This position will work a commitment of weekend hours to fulfill the requirements of the Weekend Package/Baylor pay program.

Requirements

Associate degree in nursing required
Current Iowa RN license
American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required
American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required only if the unit has telemetry monitoring capabilities
Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire
High language, intermediate to high math, high critical thinking ability
Basic computer skills required

Responsibilities

Conducts an initial assessment to gather data, making an initial assessment of new admissions within 30 minutes of arrival to the unit and completing all areas of the admission assessment database within 24 hours of admission.
Identifies patient problems and develops them into an outcome/goal-based plan of care, initiating the patient problem list, incorporating relevant medical history, analyzing and interpreting assessment data to identify desired patient outcomes/goals, determining nursing interventions, prioritizing patient care needs/activities, identifying and making appropriate referrals, and collaborating with other health care disciplines.
Implements the outcome/goal-based plan of care by assigning and coordinating patient care, organizing and prioritizing care, delegating tasks appropriately, implementing the plan of care, coordinating implementation with the Case Manager, Social Worker, and other health care disciplines, assisting to decrease patient length of stay, using nursing judgment for reassessment, reassessing at regular intervals, focusing ongoing reassessment on actual and potential problems/needs, participating in developing the discharge plan, and documenting discharge instructions.
Evaluates patient progress and revises the outcome/goal-based plan as needed by evaluating patient responses to interventions, reviewing/modifying/revising the plan of care, and updating the problem list and outcomes/goals.
Communicates relevant clinical information to the team to optimize patient outcomes/goals by communicating with physicians, reporting progress toward outcomes/goals or changes in condition, maintaining ongoing communication with interdisciplinary team members, communicating with other team leaders and members to reassess and prioritize unit needs, and documenting completely, comprehensively, and legibly.
Demonstrates clinical competence by utilizing Patient Care Policies and Procedures, assuring medication safety, prioritizing and implementing interventions, demonstrating competency in computer systems, receiving, transcribing, processing, and implementing physician orders, maintaining communication with management regarding admissions and unit needs, and completing assigned shift duties.
Manages telemetry and cardiac monitoring when applicable, demonstrating clinical competency and technical knowledge in cardiac rhythm interpretation, recognizing and responding appropriately to cardiac arrhythmias, managing multiple patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring, providing appropriate interventions for patients experiencing cardiac events, assisting with data collection and quality improvement initiatives, serving as a resource to other hospital services, and participating in unit-based committees and providing education.
Based on principles of growth and development, provides care appropriate to the age-related needs of the patients served on his/her assigned unit.
Collects, analyzes, interprets and applies age-specific data, performs tasks/procedures and uses equipment in an age-appropriate manner, and communicates and works with others in an age-appropriate manner.
Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures, attends required safety programs, appropriately uses personal protective equipment, knows and demonstrates departmental emergency procedures, reports and removes unsafe equipment/furniture, asks for assistance when needed, and maintains a safe working environment.
Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
