About The Position

This is a front-line recreation position with primary responsibilities in facilitating social, educational, cultural and recreational activities with participants of varying interests, skills, abilities, and whom are ethnically and socially diverse, including a large percentage of people who are homeless or on low fixed incomes and residing in single hotel rooms, rooming houses or social housing.

Requirements

  • Completion of Grade 10, combined with some related experience working with similar client groups or in the recreation activities related to the work assigned; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Working knowledge of the Downtown Eastside, agencies, services and resources.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of addictions, mental illness, conflict resolution and violence prevention.
  • Working knowledge of the recreational interests, social skills and related needs of the facility clients.
  • Working knowledge of the rules and skills involved in various recreational activities.
  • Working knowledge of community centre record keeping procedures related to activity participation and use.
  • Ability to develop and lead recreation programs for people of various interests and abilities.
  • Ability to support people with barriers in a peer/mentor relationship.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, members of the public, other stakeholders and staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lead activities and trips outside of the centre and actively participate in program delivery.
  • Ability to assist with event set‑up and take‑down, including light equipment handling and facility tasks.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to behavioural, safety, and emergency situations.
  • A Police Record Check clearance is a requirement of this position. A Clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.

  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture and practices is considered an asset.
  • Lived experience as an indigenous person is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in a second language is considered an asset.
  • First Aid certification is considered an assert.
  • A Class IV driver’s license is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes, implements and actively participates in arts, cultural, educational and sport-oriented recreation programming for Downtown East Side residents
  • Stimulates active participation in programs
  • Initiates, organizes and leads regular trips
  • Assists in delivery of special events, including set up and strike down
  • Prepares and distributes materials to promote activities; including some administrative tasks
  • Provides information and referrals to patrons regarding community services and resources
  • Helps to ensure that the facility and equipment are maintained
  • Takes and reports on attendance
  • Deals effectively with problem situations, which may include administering first aid and liaising with emergency medical services personnel
  • Other duties as assigned
