About The Position

The Senior Clinical Psychiatrist oversees all psychiatric service operations for the assertive community treatment team, including supervising a psychiatric nurse practitioner, providing direct services, and maintaining a medication room. Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) follows the SAMHSA service delivery model for treatment of adults with persistent mental illness. The role involves providing complete and detailed psychiatric evaluation and diagnostic services, ensuring a therapeutic environment and safety during evaluations and medication management. The psychiatrist will educate clients, family members, or legal representatives about psychiatric illness, medications, and treatment/rehabilitation techniques, and obtain informed consent for medications. They will provide individual medication services, adhering to standards of care, monitoring side effects, and referring to outside physicians when necessary. The position requires prescribing and delivering medication according to regulations, overseeing the ACT medication room, and maintaining clear, detailed, and legible documentation for client clinical records. The role also includes participating in daily team meetings, fostering harmonious working relationships, providing crisis intervention and flexibility for emergency situations, consulting with and developing treatment plans with clients and staff, providing guidance and leadership to ACT clients, administering medications in emergencies, and providing psychiatric services in various community locations such as homes and shelters. Hours may include some evenings, weekends, and holidays, with the schedule to be decided upon hiring or as needed. This is a part-time position working 20 hours per week.

Requirements

• Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as a General Psychiatrist (Diplomate).
• Possession of a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy Degree.
• Three years of experience in the practice of Psychiatry at the level of Clinical Psychiatrist.
• Satisfactory completion of a residency program in Psychiatry.
• Possession of a current, valid license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Possession of a license of registration with the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
• Ability to hold a National Provider Identifier (NPI).

Nice To Haves

• Possess a valid driver’s license.
• Board certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as well as Adult Psychiatry.
• At least three years’ experience in the supervision and administration of an outpatient or inpatient clinical psychiatric service.
• Bilingual with English/Spanish, French, African or Middle Eastern language skills.

Responsibilities

• Oversees all psychiatric service operations for the assertive community treatment team.

• Uses allocated time for initial psychiatric evaluations and medication management to ensure a therapeutic environment and safety.
• Provides a therapeutic environment conducive to a healthy relationship between the client and the psychiatrist.
• Reviews client clinical records to assure adequacy and proper prescription of medications.
• Educates clients, family members or legal representatives regarding the nature and treatment of psychiatric illness, medications, and other treatment/rehabilitation techniques.
• Obtains informed consent for medications in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Ensures clients are free to ask questions regarding medication services and any treatment options.
• Provides individual medication services on a regular basis, including following standards of care, monitoring of possible side effects and referring to outside physician when indicated.
• Prescribes and delivers medication according to rules and regulations of the Boards of Medicine and Pharmacy.
• Provides oversight of ACT medication room.
• Maintains clear and detailed correlation of all written documentation required for maintaining client clinical records.
• Prepares or signs reports in a timely manner, ensures hand written documents are legible and in accordance with safety writing procedures.
• Participates in daily team meetings.
• Ensures harmonious working relationships with co-workers, clients and others.
• Provides crisis intervention and/or ensures flexibility to intervene on emergency situations.
• Provides consultation services to, and develops treatment plans with clients and staff.
• Provides guidance and leadership with ACT clients.
• Administers medications in emergency situations.
• Provides psychiatric services where needed by clients including in homes, shelters, and other community locations.
