About The Position

The Acquisitions Assistant at MIT Press supports two Acquisitions Editors in managing book projects for various fields including cognitive science, philosophy, linguistics, bioethics, physical sciences, mathematics, and engineering. This role involves overseeing distinct and critical phases of project development for approximately 40 projects annually, covering a range of publication types. It provides an excellent opportunity to learn the book acquisitions process at a leading university press. MIT Press values diverse perspectives and global authorship. No prior subject expertise is required, and the position can introduce the assistant to the dynamic fields of publishing.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of three years of administrative experience
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Strong administrative computer skills (MS Word, FileMaker, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF)
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple task demands, and effectively manage time
  • Ability to deal with confidential information and/or issues (including peer reviewer identities, tax forms, etc.) using discretion and judgment
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and enjoy working in teams when necessary

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Publishing experience
  • Experience or engagement with diverse communities or communities that are underrepresented in STEM fields, and a willingness to apply that knowledge in the daily work of publishing
  • Academic or professional experience in computer science and/or education and learning

Responsibilities

  • Assists two Acquisitions Editors with project management for the MIT Press’s book programs.
  • Manages distinct and critical phases of project development for approximately 40 projects per year.
  • Learns the book acquisitions process at a major university press.
