About The Position

The Clinical Education department is seeking a Casual/Per Diem ACLS, CPR Instructor to train UPMC staff, including physicians, residents, nurses, and other support staff across seven hospitals. The instructor supports nursing education, specialty courses, and simulations, with collaboration essential to the role. The position travels within the Central PA region as needed; reliable transportation is required. The schedule is eight hours per month, with the ability to pick up additional shifts. The instructor coordinates and conducts credentialed courses and exams, including American Heart Association programs such as BCLS, ACLS, PALS, AED training, and First Aid. The role also administers activities of an American Heart Association Training Site and Susquehanna Health programs, including coordinating and scheduling volunteer instructors and maintaining records.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
BCLS certification at the healthcare provider level.
BCLS Instructor certification or ability to obtain it within six months of hire.
BCLS Instructor Trainer and Regional Faculty certification, or ability to obtain it within the minimum time frames established by the American Heart Association.
Emergency Medical Technician certification or ability to obtain it within six months of hire.
Successful completion of an ACLS Provider Course within the past two years, or ability to complete it within six months of hire.
ACLS Instructor certification or ability to obtain it within one year of hire.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support Instructor certification or ability to obtain it within one year of hire.
AHA HeartSaver First Aid Instructor certification or ability to obtain it within one year of hire.
If a paramedic, Pennsylvania Department of Health EMT-Paramedic certification or National Registry NREMT-P certification; if a registered nurse, licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Required clearances must be dated within 90 days.
Required credentials/clearances include ACLS, ACLS Instructor, BLS or CPR, BLS Instructor, driver's license, NREMT-P or Paramedic or RN, PALS, and Act 34 clearance with renewal.
Current licensure in the state where the facility is located, or a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state when the facility is in an NLC state. Employees working under an out-of-state NLC license who change residency to the facility's state must apply for licensure there within 60 days.
Reliable transportation is required for regional travel.

Nice To Haves

Graduate of an AMA/CAAHEP-accredited Paramedic Training Program, or graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing and licensed as an RN in Pennsylvania, or a bachelor's degree in a health or science field.
One year of experience preferred.
One year of experience as a BCLS Instructor preferred.
One year of experience as an ACLS Instructor preferred.

Responsibilities

Apply leading and evidence-based quality and safety practices in daily work, encourage high standards, identify inefficient or unsafe processes, avoid shortcuts, promote patient and family involvement in safety, speak up about quality and safety, and report serious events or incidents according to policy.
Process course records and fees for internal and external courses.
Plan, coordinate, teach, and follow up on courses as prescribed by agencies and department needs, including BCLS, AED, ACLS, PALS, and First Aid.
Maintain inventory of course-related textbooks and support materials.
Demonstrate behaviors associated with SH Service Excellence expectations; greet and treat others respectfully, represent UPMC Susquehanna, and provide quality care.
Follow organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Maintain records for instructors within the CTC structure.
Maintain mannequins and educational equipment in working order and in accordance with sanitation guidelines.
Coordinate and manage delivery of ACLS, BCLS, PALS, AED, First Aid, and other AHA programs as directed.
Take responsibility for personal development and education.
Provide quality assessment and continuing education for instructors within the CTC structure.
Demonstrate competency in assessment, treatment range, and knowledge of growth and development as related to the ages of patients treated.
Promote educational programs to healthcare professionals and the public, as well as Industrial First Aid.
Provide program-management input to the Director, Prehospital Services/Emergency Preparedness.
