The role monitors student achievement and learner behaviors, provides daily student contact and behavioral support, and works with certified staff such as social workers and counselors to address academic struggles and behavior barriers. Support may include conferencing, in-class assistance, data monitoring, alternative locations for responsible thinking, and strategies specified in behavior support plans. The specialist engages parents and guardians in planning and evaluating behavioral and academic interventions, maintains progress reporting and contact records, and collaborates with community organizations to support student success. The role also helps implement functional behavior analysis processes, behavior plans, and a positive behavior support system; works with teachers on the Responsible Thinking Process; collects and reports intervention evaluation data; and participates in relevant professional development. When the employee holds teaching certification, duties include observing classroom interactions, providing actionable feedback, and modeling lessons and interactions. The position also supports parent outreach, attendance awareness campaigns, and accurate records of student contacts, interventions, and outcomes.
