About The Position

As an Accounting Support Specialist at the DAFS Corrections Service Center (CSC) located at the Central Office in Augusta, you will work closely with the Department of Corrections staff and the CSC Senior Financial Analyst to perform specialized accounting tasks and analytical work related to restitution payments. This position plays an important role in transactional processing and review, ensuring payments are applied to accounts efficiently and accurately. Additional daily tasks include, but are not limited to, electronic deposits; and associated Business Office Review; processing required cash receipts; creating receivables for internal and external customers; and monitoring the DOC accounts receivable aging reports. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to effectively complete daily tasks, provide excellent customer service, and adapt to changing priorities. The ability to prioritize multiple tasks while working independently is required. In addition to a strong financial background, the qualified candidate must have excellent communication skills, demonstrate the ability to work well in a team environment, and have knowledge with state priority systems is preferred. Experience with MainePays, Advantage, and CORIS is preferred. The position work is in Augusta however; occasional off-site meetings are offered.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting theories, principles, methods, practices, and terminology.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting standards and systems.
  • Knowledge of computerized accounting systems and standardized desktop technology and products.
  • Ability to apply accounting principles in locating and correcting accounting errors.
  • Ability to apply accepted accounting principles to income statements and balance sheets.
  • Ability to verify fiscal source documents and application of fees, refunds, collections, and discounts.
  • Ability to review fiscal transactions for conformity with applicable laws, rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to recommend improvements in accounting controls, financial review trails, and business practices.
  • Education, training, and/or experience in accounting, business administration, financial planning, budgeting, or another related field demonstrating competency in analyzing data and records, interpreting policies, rules, and laws, identifying process and procedure deficiencies, and developing practical solutions.
